couldn't finish a workout

First I've never been able to finish a workout.  I'm in week 19 of the OS and doing my 3X12 intervals on the bike, and I my legs are toast.  Couldn't even keep within 10 watts on the first interval in the first 5 minutes!  And this is all with a rest day yesterday!!!  Oh well.  Obviously I've been training hard enough, just need more rest hooray!!  Strange feeling though.  Usually I'll loosen up and be fine, not tonight.   Hope you all are doing well!

  • That can happen to all of us Dan. Hang in there.
  • @Dan - mate, please provide some more details on your inability to hit the workouts - IMO this is a crucial issue and something that needs analysing to make sure you're not digging a big hole for yourself.
I'd be interested to hear about a sample day when you last did your 2x 12's - location - time - food that day, during & after the session.

Think you need to err on caution - 'more rest' may not necessarily be just the thing - 2 x 12' @ FTP are tough, sure but you should be sucking these up.

Summats out out of whack dude! Share some ideas in the Haus or ask RnP direct.

  • If you can't hit the watts, then you just dial them back so you can do the workout. Options are:

    * Same watts, shorter interveals (3x12 beccomes 6 x 6)
    * Same intervals, less watts (@ FTP becomes FTP minus 25W)
    * Just ride for total workout time at effort you can sustain.

We all hit a wall at different points, how you respond to the hitting is more important!!!
  •  @Dave: I don't want to get too "mental" about it.  It was the first workout I've never been able to do.  I believe the problem is that I had a bit of a hiatus from running for a few weeks for various reasons, ran on Monday cause I couldn't wait, then did my 2X20 brick workout on tuesday, wednesday was off because I didn't have time and I was tired from my baby being up.  Yesterday, baby was up again the nite before, I was on the go all day and finished it at the fair with the kids, and didn't get on the rollers until after 9pm.  Food, fair shit food!  but so good!!!  So I kinda understand why it didn't work.  I really appreciate the specifics of your concern though, made me think about possible reasons...

@Patrick:  I always thought that if you weren't getting within 10 or so watts, call it a day...?  I've busting on the bike lately and wasn't too disappointed about not being able to complete.  Thanks for the advice, I'll follow it next time.

@everyone else, appreciate hearing your concerns!

  • Dan - That's a huge day! No wonder your legs didn't want to do the workout!

    And, yeah, been there.
  • @Dan - just saw your opening line in the original post - 'First I've never been able to finish a workout.' - took that as meaning this was an ongoing deal........
  • @David: Have to work on my English writing skills!!!

  • @Dan - no worries! Pleased it was just a one-off issue with the workout - I was just concerned that you might be a deepening hole of fatigue! :-)
  • Don't sweat it. A lot of it mental especially late in the OS game.

I wouldn't worry about not finishing a workout, I had several I was too gassed to even START

  •  Well, all, I finished it today!  I cheated some, I did the 3X12 (4) but on a 2 mile hill, so basically did 3 hill repeats!  Felt great though, held the watts easily, and then did the next 45 min @ 85% on the long way home.  Thanks for all the comments!!

  • Sorry to say Dan, but I don't think you cheated. Watts are watts and 12min at FTP will cook your legs on a trainer, flats, or hill. That's partly the secret behind racing the way we do on the bike leg.
  • @Jeff:  for some reason have the easiest time holding higher watts on the hills, it doesn't feel as hard to me as on the flats or on the rollers.  I'm not a great climber either, but if I had the choice, I'd go hills, rollers, flats.  Thanks for the encouragement, funny how you come across those who don't agree with the "watts are watts" mantra and I never understood them and always felt really dumb!
