crazy high TSS when loading PT ride and Garmin run data to WKO

I've been trying to figure out my wacky PMC and have noticed a few days in the past for which I've done a bike
un brick - including in the IMWI camp.  I've assumed that WKO is smart enough to separate the data from the run and bike, but now I am not so sure.  I have the old version of WKO - 2.2.

For example, on the Saturday of the IMWI camp I did a 7 hr ride and 1 hr run.  The TSS in the calendar tab is 3090.6.  Looking back, I can see plenty of other examples of a crazy high TSS with a bike
un work out.

Would that somehow be caused by me combining a run and bike ride in the same day?

  • When I record a bike/run workout on my Garmin, or really, any day on which the Garmin records more than one workout, when I import into WKO + they appear as two separate workouts in the Save dialog box, but I'm not able to save them separately assigning one as a bike workout and one as a run, and I can't choose to not save one. So what I have to do is save them both (usually as a run, as I put in my bike workouts from the power meter), and then throw away the one I don't want.

I'm doing this all on a Mac, downloading from the Garmin into the Garmin Training Center on the Mac side, then opening WKO+ on the PC side (Parallels), and importing the saved files. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Bottom line, if I don't remember to get rid of the bike file, it will stay in WKO as a run, and give me insane TSS points as you describe.

  • Are your IF numbers off too? Are TSS numbers off for separate bike or runs? I'd start by checking both run and bike threshold values in WKO. I've found that is almost always the issue. Is it possible that WKO is calling the workout a brick or some other term rather than a bike or run? It may be trying to compute IF and TSS from another starting point. If you modify the graph to only include s/b/r and not every other type of workout the problem may show up by not showing your workout.

  • Check the NP for some of those runs. I remember seeing elavation change that made no since (5000 feet in Chicago?!?!?!) and my NP would be 5:20 for long runs. the rTSS was always jacked up. The elavation fix/correction never really helped much.

  • I think the issue is that my total workout is classified as a run.  WHen I switch the the Sport Type in the daily Journal view from Run to Bike the TSS goes to a more reasonable number.

However, it does not look like my Run TSS is being factored into a daily total.  I think WKO is confused by the runike combo.

Al, can you give more details on how you import both run and bike data on the same day?  How to you get WKO to separate the two workouts?

    Thanks

  • @ Hayes- yea me too. elevation corrections never did anything for me. had to manually adjust everything. if I really don't trust it, I just do a create a new workout, put in the time and mileage and then use that rTSS as my number. May be undershooting but better that than over. then I just delete the created one.

@ Dave- if you click the little 123 icon on WKO you can smooth out those crazy data points. I have had a few this year in the 1500 watt range that have resulted in 5000 TSS days etc. I go into where that point is and then put in something more reasonable so it smooths it all out.

also- I always load the bike workout first into WKO. then I right click that date on the calendar and click "create new workout". then I add the garmin file to that and the two workouts are seperate on the same day.

That is what I was looking for!!!  I re-added my run workouts for as far back as my Garmin had history as separate workouts and cleaned up the run data from my workouts.  Now I finally have an accurate TSB (-40) after yesterday's race rehearsal.

    Thanks.

  • i have never had an issue where WKO "confused" brick workouts. However, I use a 310xt for the run and an edge 705 for the bike.

Leigh -  I use "ground control" option when doing the elevation corrections and it seems to fix things pretty well.  I know that for a while TP had some serious issues with the elevation correction feature.  They had disabled it unless you had a paid TP subscription.  Everyone complained and they turned it back on.

  • @Corso- Oo. good to know! I hadn't even checked lately just thought it would stay off unless I subscribed. thanks!
