Calgary 70.3 RR. Training day for IM Canada

As a Calgarian with young kids I jumped at the chance to do this  local 70,3.

I am going to IM Canada at the end of Aug.  With IMC so close I used the day as a dress rehearsal including pacing and nutrition. No need for speed here. I wanted to come out feeling fresh and ready to get back training.

Trained into the race, the only thing I changed was to reduce my long run and have a one day taper.

Volunteered on Saturday at T1 after dropping my bike off.

Swim was uneventful as it should be. Looked for open water, stayed wide and focused on form.

Quickly got through T1 as the misquotes were thick.

Stopped at all the bike aid stations for a stretch and to use the john. Could have reduce the hydration because of the cooler weather but continued to drink as IM plan.

Stopped at a bike accident and use my cell to call 911, waited until the ambulance arrived. Someone tried to pass on the inside and lost control. Nasty face plant on the pavement. He was showing signs of short tern memory lost. Every 3 min he would as ask what happened then try to stand and fall over. I was shocked to see him on the run. He finished the race after refusing medical aid. What can I say I would have pulled him from the race.

T2 went smoothly.

First 5 k of the run was at a very slow pace and tried to slow that down. Walked all the run aid stations.

At the turnaround took off my shoes, was having minor knee pain but disappeared soon after relaxing into my form
.

Had lots of gas so pushed the last 5 k passed lots of hurting runners.

Sprinted down the chute.

Felt good after finishing so volunteered at bike pickup and wandered around handing out thermal blankets for a couple of hrs.

 Overall had a great day.

Took one day off.

Back to running Tuesday with a 20k,

Feet were a bit sore but felt fresh.

Strong swim and bike on Wednesday .

Time to finish this thing I started three years ago

.

Great work! Good to see you on the run. So big question...do you guys always have bugs like that up there?!?

Oh, and I cant believe you ran the second half barefoot.

  • That was the worst mosquito swarm that I can remember .

Next year will be better I guaranty.

Thanks for cheering at the finish.
