Timberman 70.3 (8/22/10) - anyone in

hey, I'm heading to NH in a few weeks... thought I'd touch base to see if any other EN folks will be there...

if so, and you're doing the HIM plan - good luck with the second RR tomorrow!

Comments

  • I am in! and not really looking forward to the RR tomorrow but will get it done. I was going to ride the course but a monkey wrench got thrown into those plans.

    Good Luck tomorrow.

  • I'll be doing the sprint on Sat and cheering on 2 brothers doing the 70.3 on Sunday.    So I'll be there cheering on those of you with EN kits on.

  • I'm hoping to come and cheer!

Hey, Ford, how come we're not riding together??? Check your FB.

  • We can ride next weekend, gotta do a 2 hour or so ride next weekend.

  • @Linda - that would be great... would love to meet you!  (although I'll be at IMMoooooooo to cheer)  If you're familar with the area, would love some recommendations on places to eat, etc.  Dan and I are coming in Fri and staying til Monday (at a HI Express in Concord).

  • I am heading up next Thursday. Will do the race, but it is going to be a C level one due to lack of training.
  • You guys are gonna have such a great time. I loved it up there last year. It's a great weekend, KJ puts on a first class event and the area is super-nice. Have fun!!
  • Volunteering Saturday and racing Sunday.
  • Looking forward to meeting more EN folks this weekend!  I'm hitting the road tomorrow... we're staying at a B&B nearby (a recent change in plans), which should be very convenient.

Anyone have good suggestions re: places to eat?  Going to the pasta dinner/is it worth it?  (I don't have tickets).

I'm in the last wave (18 of 18)... so I suspect I won't see folks til they lap me on the run.

Thanks, Cary!  I've heard really good things and am looking forward to it... although when I come back and recover I'll be staring down the barrel of IMFL in 10 weeks.

  • Great to meet you Steve and Aaron, glad you stopped to introduce yourself on the run - you looked like you were smoking along!

I may eventually do a race report but for now here's a quick debrief:  Long story short I have mixed feelings about the weekend.  My time was what I expected based on my RRs at River Rd (but the ride was easier so my bike time should have, in theory, been better than anticipated), my overall rank in my AG is good (top third)... but I just had a bad day - starting with a crappy swim, followed by cold and rain (at times hard) on the bike... I did feel good on the run so that's something... So I just don't know what my take away is yet.  If I was having fun and feeling good it would have been one thing but my bad swim took me out of my box and my mood was poopy from that point - and it hit a low point on the bike when the rain was hard - I was struggling to just get it done until I started running (when I embrace a light cool rain).  So, I guess it was a total learning experience and mental toughness exercise.  So, I just don't know how I feel yet.  Very mixed.  I will say that racing with HR stinks... not sure if I could have gone harder on the bike, though bc of the weather I was fairly conservative and my head was in a bad place - particularly on the long flat out on 106 (?) when I should have been rocking and rolling and banking easy time - I couldn't because I was riding in rain/hail into a headwind.  Sigh.

But, 65 (I think) out of one ninety something is pretty cool... despite my crappy swim I was 38th in my AG... and I must have done something right on the bike because I was 58th in my AG on the run - passing lots of folks along the way (being in the last wave I knew that everyone I passed had at least 5 minutes on me).  Hmm... focus on the good... I had a rough race, my head was not where it should have been, I struggled to stay in the box, failing often... but I ended up in the top third of my AG.  If I'm decent on a bad day... wow, I could be pretty good on a good day, right?

Tired today.  I wish I could have taken a real recovery day (not sitting in the car... oh, love the Zoot recovery tights by the way)... but being back at work will be good to get my head off this race!  Now it's time to recover right and get ready for IMFL!

Hope the other EN'ers (Steve, Aaron, Jordan) who were out there had great races!

  • Great to meet you as well. Glad I caw your race kit. My race was similar to yours Becky. I crashed pretty bad at Timberman last year, so I took the bike very easy. I would rate the bike course on the low side of moderate difficulty, outside of a few crazy descents. Run is easy.

My let down was the swim. Based on RR/swim TT I expected to be close to 30min. I came in at 38min. I was a late wave as well, 15 out of 18 I believe so the swim was crazy packed when I got in the water. I felt that I had to dodge the entire time. Extra bathroom stops on the run course added time as well. ~5min. I had a good day, with a crummy swim.

I cruised easy at a 5:30 flat finish.
