Gait Analysis

Early this year Coach P offered a gait analysis service to a small group of people. I am interested to know how it went, and if there was a possibility of it happening again. For the remainder of the year I am slightly changing my focus to running. So figured it would be a good time to look at my form. Before I know it CdA will take center stage.

Thanks,
Pete

  • I am here and can still do it; talk to Kitima as she (and hubby!) had it done...
  • @P: Thanks. If I decide to do this how should I go about getting you what you need?

@Kitima: What is the best way to get your opinion and feedback on this? Should I PM you directly?
  • Hi, Pete! Just found this...

For the gait analysis, my DH took 2 videos of each other: one panning as one of us ran by at somewhere between HMP and tempo and another one straight on (frontal view) as one of us ran toward the camera. Coach P analyzes the vids and then compares them to a video of Mirinda Carafrae running. It was very helpful--especially the part with the comparison to Mirinda's run form. I had alot of improvements to make: not just about my footfall, but arm carriage. There was a discrepancy between my left and right leg in the driving of the knee up part (I had no idea). Both of us (me and DH) were given drills and tips on how to improve our form.
My DH says,"What your mind's eye sees and what is reality can be two very different things. Having video analysis of my golf stroke was very helpful to my game. Coach P's gait analysis of my run form was also greatly beneficial."
My thoughts: Golf?! Pffft! Seriously, it was really helpful. I started really thinking about my run form about 2 years ago (watching Evolution Running DVD by Ken Mierke and reading about Pose method and Chi running) and worked really hard to increase my cadence and have a forefoot strike. It was great to have the video analysis because it pointed out that I also needed focus on the push off/toe off and that I was leaning forward but not at the ankles.
    Hope that helps!
  • @Kitima: Thanks for the feedback. Like you and your DH, I think I have pretty decent running form but it would be good to have someone take a critical look at it. Mirinda Carafrae, I'm not, so I am sure there are areas for improvement. BTW, I just noticed that you live out in the Finger Lakes region. My DW's family lives just a bit SW of you in Springwater. There is some great riding out there!
  • I'd like to do this to. Do we just send a couple of videos to Coach P? Is there an advantage to sending videos at different times during my workout so you can see if I'm keeping the same form after I get tired?
