Long Run Playlist

The Long Run is my favorite workout!  and gonna run long this week thanks to CoachP and hope to hit 18 miles!  son #3 said "Mom, you have some "different" music!  cuz I have gotten some of your favorite songs....

but I need some new ones!  already got the "Chica playlist for IMWI"

and I bet that the other IMWI peeps would like some MOJO from the EN team so when we play "your song".. we can remember you.

1.  so post your song, but if it has a story or meaning then tell why!  or funny tale too.

2.  Note:  if you think the song gets me thru tough miles then let me know so I can put at end of playlist.

3.  I have been known to dance to the music while running!  or sing out loud!  and no kidding I have Lord of the Dance, to Tom Jones to Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Newsboys, HIllsong, Shania Twain. Beyonce....I like classical but seem to be short and also seem to be low in country!  adn don't think I have any jazz.

I will name the playlist "EN friends".. just 33 days left to WI, so only a few more of these great long runs!  so jazzed.

  • Marianne - When I did IM Moo, I found the BoDeans fit right in. They're from Wisc, of course, and have a big following in Madison. They've been around since the 80s when they sounded like a mash-up of U2, The Everly Bros, and Bruce Springsteen, but their stuff from this century is mellower and a touch more mature.

  •  x2 with Bodeans! Good memories of seeing them at the Madison civic center. Great concert.

Creed- many songs for long runs. Reminds me of running trails in Tucson, the smell of the desert, saguaro cactus, big blue skies

Put it the thread for songs for mile 18- Bust A Move by Young MC- heard at work the other night, cracked me up-

  • Janelle Monae - "Tightrope"  I like to listen to this song and channel all the wicked cool dance moves from the video:

And the Beastie Boys "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (to Party!)" has been making me happy this week -- we've gotta train for our right to party on September 12!

And Rick Springfield - "Jessie's Girl" - because I'm on an eighties kick.

And on the eighties theme - "Breakfast Club" - Z-Trip

  • There is a local singer in Madison called Pat McCurdy. He is a one man show and you can find some of his music around. When I need to totally turn off the pain and smile, I play his song, Sex and Beer and for that three minutes, the pain goes away. Doesn't get more Madison than Pat.

By the way, I am pretty sure you can check out his show at the Regent St. Retreat every Tuesday if it is still there. Well worth it.
  • If you really want to make the pain go away, you have to add Green Day, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. This song gets straight to the point about not messing around.
  • Some of my faves for this year:

    Sweet Disposition- Jason Derulo

Renegades of Funk- Rage Against the Machine

    From Where you are- Lifehouse

    Someday- Rob Thomas

Uprising- Muse  (thank you Olivia S)

    Sweet Little Thing- Alessandro Viale

  • AC/DC : Thunderstruck, Back in Black, Hells Bells, Highway to Hell always seems oddly appropriate
Metallica : Master of the Puppets, Hero of the Day (both from the S&M disk set)

    I can't believe no one's mentioned this......

    Ozzy: Iron Man
  • OK- all this 80's talk had me remember an old favorite "pump you up, power to the people" kinda song:
Carly Simon, "Let The River Run", it's the theme song from the movie Working Girl.

Might just have to add that one to the Chica playlist.

Oh- and "Swim until you can't see land" by Frightened Rabbit. That's another new favorite
  • How could I forget Lunatic Fringe by Red Ryder? Also it was the theme song from the movie Vision Quest. That is one of the best sports movies ever. Here is a great clip from it.

When you add Green Day songs,  be sure NOT to add Boulevard of Broken Dreams.  I heard a snippet of Green Day from American Idiot on race day at IMLP then couldn't get out of my head how awful it would be to blast Boulevard of Broken Dreams out on the course. The song kept playing over and over in my head on the last few miles of the run.  For those who don't know, here are the lyrics:

    I walk a lonely road

The only one that I have ever known

    Don't know where it goes

But it's home to me and I walk alone

    I walk this empty street

On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams

    Where the city sleeps

and I'm the only one and I walk alone

    ...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

    'Til then I walk alone

    ...

    I'm walking down the line

That divides me somewhere in my mind

    On the border line

Of the edge and where I walk alone

    Read between the lines

What's fucked up and everything's alright

    Check my vital signs

To know I'm still alive and I walk alone

  • thanks for music, yes no "down" music for me! will upload gonna run long tomorrow! m
  •  Foo Fighters- times like these & My Hero

    Earth, Wind and  Fire- September

Black Box- Strike it up & Everybody Everybody

Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny) [feat. Nicole Scherzinger] A.R. Rahman & The Pussycat Dolls

Gonna Make you Sweat- C& C Music factory

  • seriously, am I the only one with Eye of the Tiger on their playlist?
  • I never ride or run with music...but I might just start

Anyway, not sure where you would find it, but military running cadence songs are made for...running. Of course, Marine cadence is the best.

Seriously, you put that stuff in your head and you can just go and go. Plus you can learn about Jodie, Suzy, Chesty, and many more . This is the cleaner stuff. There are....others...reserved for special occasions

This one is for you, Linda, and few of the other gals . FYI, PT = Physical Training

  • Oh man, I can't handle running cadence any more. I am in the Army, and the more fit units (Airborne Infantry/Rangers) are distancing themselves from cadence. I think I've had my fill of that for a long while. Formation runs are generally going away as well other than the "motivational" BN run every 6-8 months or so.

For me, nothing beats some fast paced music like Dropkick Murphys for that long run motivation. Rocky Road to Dublin is my personal favorite.
  • Love it! I have spent many long runs with My Grandmama was a 92 in my head.

  • Black Cat & C130 rolling down the strip from US Army Ranger cadence are on my IPOD. DH was in Army, Ranger and yes back in the day they did run in the mornings and yes you can just zone out with these two and go right along!! Yes Eye of the tiger is on my IPOD too! m
  • For long runs exceeding 2h, I just put "My Sharona" on an infinite repeat loop. In the name of mental toughness.
  • hey dave, you might have to add "Hey Mickey" to "My Sharona" on the infinite loop to get the complete mental toughness.
  • Overall, I am an 80's metal head.  I am a dork and I live in a bubble and I am fine with that.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Metallica = Breadfan.  Always gets my juices flowing.

Ozzy = Bark at the Moon

    Mottley Crue = Wild Side

    Tesla = Modern Day Cowboy

Skid Row = Youth Gone Wild

    Rush = Limelight

Black Sabbath (with Dio) = Heaven and Hell

Rob Halford = Tyrant (old Priest stuff)

    Newer stuff:

3 Doors Down, some Black Eyed Peas (though a lot of their stuff sounds the same), Green Day, John Mayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.

There's a very dirty, very un-pc cover of "Hey Mickey," called "Hey, Nitty," that is on my long run playlist. Song's got a good beat.

  • I have a friend who's far more in to music, and I let him have his way with my iPod every so often (we refer to them as spa treatments), that said, I have a list of must haves/must keeps.  The ones I can think of offhand are:  I will survive; There you go (pink); Lose yourself (eminem); Black horse and a cherry tree; Gonna make you sweat; Pump up the jam; Strength of a Woman (Shaggy); I kissed a girl

The most recent spa treatment so far has been great - he's added some Adam Lambert (what do you want from me) that I like and a song that has the refrain:  Im in Misery... which, when I was doing my RR seemed about right on the money.

For the most part, anything with a good, sort of techno/dance beat and cool lyrics... and man-hating/woman power music (sorry guys) is always motivational - I am an EN chica, after all...
