Marine Corps rathon

I am doing the MCM Oct 31. Any one have a suggestion for good training plans and where I can find/purchase them?

  • Have you checked into Coach P's Marathon Nation yet? :-)

    http://www.marathonnation.us/
  • If you are already folowing the EN plan you might want to check out the Marathon Hack designed by the Coaches. I am currently using it for the Niagara Falls marathon (10/24), so you should have enough time to incorporate most of the hack. Good luck!

  • halhigdon.com also has good marathon plans.

I did MCM last year. If you have any questions, let me know. If it's the same course as last year, the first 21 miles are awesome. the last 5 are really boring. the last .2 just plain suck. just be prepared to have a ton of crowd support, then very little, then a ton but a gigantic hill to finish.
  • Thanks guys. I will look at the sites. @Adam, I look forward to the run--I have wanted to do this race since my Navy days. Finally happening.
  • I've used Hal Higdon for all of my marathons and have liked the plans - and they're free!

I did MCM a few years ago - they had changed the course that year bc of construction on Rock Creek Pkwy, but last year they really changed the course, moving Hains Point to the first half... in any event... the expo is huge; the race will be very well supported until the back side of the Pentagon (around mile 22ish), then the finish is up a short and steep little hill to Iwa Jima... then it will be so super crowded be prepared to come to a complete stop and be herded like cattle to get your wrap, your medal, your food, etc.

I have to warn you, though, if you plan to take metro to/from the race... well, getting anywhere on metro from Rosslyn after the race may take hours - literally.  There will likely be a line down the street to even get down the escalators onto the platform... as horrible as it may sound, you might want to walk to Arlington Cemetary to get on the metro there... or have a car stashed somewhere in the Rosslyn area to escape in.  But if you're super speedy this may not be a problem... I am not super speedy and it was a problem.

Post race logistics are, well, to be kind, not ideal... too bad because in most other respects it's a well run race.

  • Glenn- where do you live? If you are in Montgomery County, MD then I would HIGHLY recommend the MCRRC marathon training programs (there is a beginner program and an experienced marathoner program). Additionally, MCRRC hosts a race day party in a room in one of the hotels near the start/finish . Club members can stash warm cloths there before walking to the start, then return to the hotel to change into warm/dry cloths, get a massage, grab some good post race food, and simply relax a bit while the crowds on the metro die down. It's a great deal for a tiny little running club membership fee!
  • Glenn- I would love to do this race next year.  My dad was a WW11 Marine Vet,...fought on Iwo Jima...something in me just has to do this marathon to honor my dad....anyhow...is the race by lottery?

  • @Kathy - no lottery... at least not yet, but it does close really fast!  lots of fundraising groups participate - TNT, Fisher House... in case you don't get in.

    K. Thanks Becky!

  • @Kathy, it wasn't by lottery but I got in early by completing the Little Rock Marathon (my first outside of an Ironman). MCM has always been on my list. Semper Fi for your Dad.
