Hi and help getting started

Hi ladies,

I've just joined so thought I'd introduce myself (I wrote another thread somewhere too, but there are so many threads I'm not sure which ones people read!)

My name is Lauren and I live in London. I've been doing triathlons for 4 years. I used to be a swimmer but stopped after uni and after six months of working and doing no exercise at all thought I'd better think of something else to do, so entered the London Triathlon as a challenge to raise some money for charity. After that I was hooked, and started doing all kinds of events (I love the buzz of race day!) but with no structured training. I've done three Ironman races, in 08, 09, 10. I coached myself for the first two (not very structured!) then bought the EN IM plan for France this year. I kind of followed it, but not very closely, and I want to see what I can achieve if I follow a plan properly and focus on Ironman only in 2011.

I really like the idea of being in a team of people who are all doing the same thing. I love the social aspect of triathlon and I guess that's whats stopped me from ever sticking to a plan; I tend to just go along with what other people I know are doing and forget about my own objectives!

Anyway, I was hoping someone could tell me how I get started with a plan.  I think I'll be starting the Oct OS, but I've had nearly two months off since France and I would like to get back into training.  I've been into 'My training plan' and tried to select a plan change to the general maintainance (figure this is the right one?) but it still says I have no plan. Does it take a day or so for the plan to load or am I missing something?

Thanks very much and nice to meet you all!

Lauren

  • Hi Lauren! Welcome! You will love the vibe of this team!!! It is unlike anything I've ever encountered! Additionally, you must get into the Women's Forum! The thread is "What it Takes", and it is an incredibly supportive women's vibe! Okay, regarding starting your plan...I would suggest you post to the Macro thread and ask Coaches Rich and Patrick where they want you to start. It will depend on what IM you are planning to do this year. Are you doing IMUK, Germany, Switzerland, coming to the States? The race you plan to do is the basis for where you are dropped into plans. Most likely you will go to October OS, but ask the coaches.
What IM's did you do in 08, 09, 10? I am doing IMLOU on August 29th. It is my first IM! I am relatively a newbie to EN as well, having joined in October of 2009. I love the people and how everyone supports each other. We are like a very extended family! There are some other members here from the UK as well.
So glad to have you with us here in da HAUS!
  • Welcome Lauren!

Coach RnP have consolidated all the "Getting Started" info here: http://endurancenation.us.dnnmax.com/Resources/Wiki/tabid/108/Default.aspx?topic=Getting+Started

What races are you doing next year?
How did you like IM France? Did you get to rub elbows with Laurent Jalabert? image
  • Welcome Lauren!! Looking forward to getting to know you. I've heard IM France is pretty tough- so congrats on that one! What is up next?
  • Hi guys, thanks for your messages and help. I've left a message in the macro thread as I thought I'd followed the 'getting started' instructions and still don't have a plan. I'm sure it will make sense eventually though!

France was great, I'd definitely recommend it. The swim start was pretty rough as it was a huge race (about 2500) but the sea was beautiful. The bike course was tough, but I quite like long steady climbs and the technical bits kept you focused all the way through. I had a bit of a difficult run, I didn't know it at the time but I had a kidney infection I mistook for dodgy stomach (duh) so had to walk a bit because of the pain (I ended up in hospital for a week after!) I was still really happy with my time - 11:18 - though, and was 6 seconds behind 3rd place!

I'm still undecided about which race to do next year, and need to make a decision soon as everything sells out so quickly! I'd really like to have a shot at getting a Kona slot and trying to figure out the best place to go for it. UK is probably the least competitive, but everything I've heard about the race is quite negative. On the other hand, Regensberg (Germany) seems to attract some super-fast people, but looks like an amazing race. I was looking at US races as thought it might be fun to race with a heap of other people from the EN team. St George is the only one that hasn't sold out already, and I'd love to race in Utah but the cold-ness/weather is quite scary!

What races are you guys aiming for next year?

Barbara ~ Good luck at Louisville. I'm sure you are super prepared if you have been following the EN plan. I didn't have a clue what I was doing before my first race at Austria but still loved it!

  • Hi Lauren, welcome to the team!  I second what some others have said about the women's "what it takes" thread - it's an amazing group of super knowledgeable, kind, and supportive women and I'm so glad to be a part of the group!

as far as your question goes, since i just changed plans (from HIM to IM prep)... I know that each plan is set for so many weeks and you select an end date and then the computer calculates back and tells you went to start.  Perhaps you set your end date out so far (i.e., for an 8 week plan) so you aren't technically supposed to start yet.  Maybe you could go back in and change your plan by selecting a different end date?  Just a thought... but the coaches macro thread re: what to do this week will get a response.

good luck and once again, welcome to EN!

  • Lauren,

Another fast Brit!  11:18 at France? That's legit.  You've obviously got some real cycling talent.

Regensburg is an interesting choice for a Kona qualifier.  The times are insane, but if you look closely, the KQ spots rolled down very deep ... deeper, I think, than other european races.  It's impossible to game this year over year-  you never know who else is going to show up - but I would keep this one on your radar.

Then again, Utah might be exactly the type of challenging course where you could exploit your competition's weaknesses and highlight your cycling strengths.
