Tire/Rim Match

Uhh, stupid question. I need to replace a tire on my son's MTN bike. The bike has a 20x2.125 rim and tire. Can I replace the tire with a 20x2.0 tire? Also this is on the rear tire, which would make the read smaller than the front. Is this okay or should I replace both?

  • A 2.0 tire should fit on a 2.125 rim. Sounds like a BMX bike tire size. A very narrow tire on a wide rim will have a higher chance of pinch flats.
On a mtb, the front and back tires do not have to match in tread or in width. In fact, alot of racing (XC and downhill) mtb tire sets are with two different tires for front and back depending on the conditions. For muddy, slippery rooty conditions I put a wider tire on the front with knobs that are wider apart and a slightly narrower tire and less aggressive tread on the back for less rolling resistance.
  • What kitima said.  I do the same thing.

Only possible issue could be the tire is too wide and you have some rubbing on the frame or hand brake pads.
