training with disc cover

I have a five or so weeks until Syracuse.  I have my wheel covers and would like to ride the course tomorrow with them.  Should I even bother first of all, if so, should I keep them on until the race or remove until the final 2 weeks?  Thanks!

  • Dan,

I asked this about a RR at Placid and the inside the haus wisdom was save the cover for race day, unless you have specific issues/fears about it that you need to address ahead of time.

Also, I didn't know you were doing SYR 70.3 - I'll add you to the list on this thread. Feel free to "check in" there as well.

Please be aware there is a NEW NEW course, that was posted to the site 2-3 weeks ago. If you do the RR with a GPS unit can you post it some where or email it?
  • In '08 I raced Wildflower, early May with the covers on and then was just too lazy to take them off = I rode ~1500+ miles with them before IMCDA. I thought it was valuable, as I rode them in all conditions. Wind, descending, etc.

  •  Thank you gentlemen for your input.  I may just put them on to mess around.  They seem simple enough to put on and take off.  I do worry about wind sometimes because the past few rides I've done I have been blown some without them.

@Cary, thanks for the thread update, no I wasn't a part of it... I will give you a report, sorry to say that I will not be using a gps.  Thanks for the tip about the directions.  I had read about it on ST a few weeks back, but what I didn't realize was that the map was wrong still but the written directions were accurate.  I'll give a post on the course.  If I have time, I wan't to get a run in to....

  • Dan, how did it go?
  •  Well, the cover didn't fit right.  It rubbed on the cassette and derailluer so I have to mess with it.  I was up until 11 fiddling with it before I gave up and took it off.  The course on the other hand was a different matter.  I'll update everyone tonight on that, it was difficult.  Thanks for asking!

Let's see if I understand this correctly.... the guy that gives me crap about being a Fred and not wearing a matching kit rides with a wheel cover for well over a month and 1500 miles???

  • @Dan there are a few wheelcover threads here with a lot of information. Search "wheelcover"

Looking forward the the route report.

That is correct. I believe I even had my monstrous EN stickers on the wheel at the time and I know I dropped into my Saturday roadie ride a few times as well :-)

  • Wheelbuilder.com sez "Disc covers are not intended for continuous training use.  Remove covers between races."

That said, I'm at about month 3 of continuous training use.  Maybe a few small cracks around the screwholes, but no real harm done.

  • The only things that have ever harmed my disc cover are

1- using a conventional pump, and not being careful removing it from the stem (caused a 2" rip, fixed with electrical tape)

2- bike on top of car, cover stuck on one of the stupid DT Swiss rim stickers, bulged out, caused the thing to act like a sail. Almost pulled one of the plastic rivets through the hole.

I've totally done continuous training for several weeks just leaving it on. I'd be surprised if there's anything you can do to them while riding that would harm them.

  •  @Mike: wanted to congratulate you on a great performance at IMLP!  Tried to message you, but can't figure out how to do it thru the site unless I get a message from you.  Hope you hit all your times, even though yours was pretty good for your first.  Well done man.

What front wheels do you guys run with the disc?  I'm thinking of renting a 606, but a friend has an old mavic that might be comparable to a 404.  My only reservation is that it is a tubular and I have no idea how to switch them out and don't want to find out on race day.

  • Thanks, Dan! Very happy with the race.

I'm running a SRAM S80 on the front. Deep is good!
