Tri Swim Coach

Has anyone purchased and used the Tri Swim Coach product? I am looking for something that will give me some drills and tips on how to better swim. At this point my concern is not to be fast, just to finish. So what I need is some drills to improve my breathing, position in the water and stroke. I hope that I can then use these skills to improve muscular endurance so that I can simply survive the 2.4 miles I have in front of me?

  • Peter,

I can't speak for the Tri Swim products, but I believe a good investment would be a few 1-on1 lessons with a swim coach. You can learn a lot by having someone look at you doing laps and then point out "large" problems in your stroke that you're not aware of and then tell you which drills will work best for your stroke issues.
  • Pete, have you tried the EN swim ebook? Tons of stuff, all addressing exactly what you're talking about. Oh yeah, and free...
  • @Mike: Yeah I grab the EN swim book from the wiki, but it seems rather incomplete. I just can't make heads or tails of it. I was going to purchase from the store, but Rich says they are exactly the same.

@Cary: I have been in search of a semi-local swim coach but have had no luck. This whole swimming thing is very intimidating. My confidence is so low in that area. I feel stupid swimming in front of other people so just give up most of the time. My head is always out of the water, my arms are flailing and I am constantly sinking. I need to find something that helps me develop a "normal" swim position so that I don't feel like a fish out of water. I will get through this just need to find that extra motivation, and some self confidence would be nice.
  • Peter,

It sounds like you need very basic swim instruction to get you jumpstarted. Is there a Y or an Adult Ed program nearby? What about approaching a HS or college coach and asking them? Or perhaps ask one of the people or lifeguards at the pool that you swim at.

You should definitely spend the time at the pool regardless of how you feel. If you know you're keeping your head out of the water then work on that. Break it up in to smaller components.

I'm sure there are resources on YouTube for basic swim instruction as well.
