Six Degrees of sENparation - or has Endurance Nation made your world smaller.

I've had two of these EN making my world smaller episodes recently.

First, I get @replied in a tweet by my friend Robyn. But it's not just me that was @replied it was Aaron Linkow as well.

@aaronlinkow @blanco any recommendations for stretches for hams and glutes post run? ow

She did mention to be that she knew someone that did CdA, but I never imagined it would be one of the 20+ EN folks in the race. And don't worry, I sent her to Leigh's blog to get help she needed

Next, at the team dinner in Lake Placid I wound up sitting next to David Martin's wife Jennifer. We had a pleasant conversation that lead to where were we grew up. It turns out Jennifer and I went to the same high school, although she graduated two years after I did. But ... I knew her sister Dana, that graduated the same year I did as she sat next to me in homeroom for many years! Crazy!

So, anyone else have Endurance Nation make their circles of friends and acquaintances smaller?

Comments

  • Yeah- I posted an update on Suzannes FB Wall (or vice versa) a little while back (can't remember the subject). A non-EN friend posted a comment indicating she knew both of us. Small world- turns out she is the masters coach where Suzanne swims, meanwhile I knew her (initially anyway) through her husband- we both trained together for our first marathon many years ago. Facebook and Twitter both have a way of making you realize how much smaller the world is!
  • I know that ex-ENer, Tomer, and I used to work together...same buildling, same projects, etc.

Also, one of my very first EN icon pics was a University of the Pacific Tiger mascot. SoCal Rich Miller asked me if I went to UOP (Stockton CA).
Then we further found out we're in the same fraternity, AKL (different generations, but same fraternity). And, of course, that we know the same people.
Unfortunately, Rich didn't make our 55th reunion this year in late June, where I could have finally met him face-to-face.
  •  OK, I have to add a new one to this thread.

I do a pretty good job of keeping work stuff at work, and personal stuff at home.  But of course you can't do an Ironman without telling the boss.  Anyway, today I get a call from the boss (returning my call, no biggie) and he says "So how are you feeling Helen......or should I call you Nemo?"    Huh?    While nearly all my friends call me Nemo, at work I'm still Helen (was Helen Elisabeth for quite some time actually).  So I'm thinking "Oh, you must have read my race report that I sent to Linda" (a co-worker who donated to my fundraiser- all contributors got a copy).  And he says, "No, actually, my sister-in-law also did Ironman Wisconsin and I mentioned to her that you were there.  When I told her your name, she said "OH!  Nemo!  She's like a founding member or something of EN, the team I just joined"     I laughed so hard and said "See, I'm famous!"

Turns out one of our newest members, Gi Gi, is my boss's sis-in-law!  I met Gi Gi in Madison at the 4 keys talk.  We chatted a little, I gave her one of the Coach Rich pink speedo buttons, and then I think that was about it.

Anyway- another small world experience for sure!  And now I better be careful about trashing the boss here in the forum!

  • Nemo (Queen of All  Things EN)

Just wanted to shout out and tell you great job on fundraising and what an excellent idea to send a post race report to all of the people who donated to the cause.  It helps to prime the pump if you want to hit them up next year.  I know it is a little off topic.

  • Thanks Jim :-) Coming from you, the king of fundraising, that's a huge compliment!

OK, I had another EN close encounter this past weekend. I'm at a local 5K (small race, like 100 people tops) and there's another woman racing nearby me who I know from other events (she runs the "Run Farther" program, a great running program for kids, especially those in after school programs, who tend to fall between the cracks and don't have opportunities to join local recreation programs). Anyway, I used her as a carrot for the first half of the race, and after passing her around the half way point used her as my "stick" knowing she was just a few feet behind me the whole time. Crossed the line, very happy with my performance and turned around to give her a hug of thanks for racing with me.

We hung around for awards (both of us placed in our respective AGs) and as we waited she said "I think you know my cousin, he comes down on vacation and you've ridden with him, his name is Ralph". HA HA HA! Ralph Butler and I have hooked up for rides & breakfast when he comes to town with his family for vacation. I recalled he had a family member living down here somewhere, but didn't know it was Samantha!

So Ralph, Sam says Hi :-)
