In Northern Chicago (great lakes)

I have been sent on tempory duty to cover Surgery at Great Lakes Navy Center for the next ten days.  I have my A race (HIM) in 4 weeks.  Should of brought my bike shoes and pedals but didn't (Although my buddy at home said he will fed ex to me if I want).  I figure I will do my biking on a life cycle and then do extra running.

Any great running trails in this area?>

Any bike shops rent bikes? (Just found out I have the weekend off)

Any thing I should do and see while here?

Thanks

  • Hi Ralph,

There's a fantastic running trail that runs beside the Metra tracks. Just pick it up a few feet away from the Great Lakes station and run south.

Hm. What sort of things do you like? Downtown Chicago is bustling with all sorts of cool things right now.
  • Beth,

Thanks for the tip on the trail.  Will look for that today.  Need to do my long run on Thursday somewhere.  Any recs on good bike shops to check out?

I have been in downtown a number of times for conferences before but never really do anything but eat and walk around and look at stores and see the sites in Chicago itself.  I have not hit any of the museums though.....

I was just curious if there is anything around Chicago that I should go see while I have  the time.  I am from the south east and not sure when I will get up here again.  The weather is great!

  • Welcome to the Mid-West Ralph!

I have a friend who works as a NETC at the base there. His name is Rob Breakiron. We trained for IMAZ together last year and he should be able to help you out with trails and such in that area. I'll let him know you might seek him out.

As for the rentals, I'm not sure of any place that does but I have two bikes, size 56 with Look cleats, and if you are interested in riding this weekend we can figure something out. Please provide your own helmet and shoes.

As for sight seeing there's TONS of cool stuff. Beth and I probably tend more towards great food but there are some cool sights from the Sears.. er, Willis Tower and the Handcock building. There's a couple pretty good local brewery's and you have to get a sampling of some Chicago Pizza. Pequods, Uno's, or Gino's East will probably give you the best sampling. Pequods is my fav.
  • Jeff,
Thanks I might take you up on the bike loan. I ride a 58 Cervelo so it might be a little small but probably a better fit then an exercise bike! If not I will just do an extra long run this weekend. Will look for Pequods Pizza is one of my weaknesses.....that and beer!

  • Hi Ralph -- Jeff's got pizza down. If you want beer, I suggest a field trip to Hopleaf. They have all the beer. It is basically beer heaven.
  • Oh, and the Art Institute has a cool Cartier-Bresson photography exhibit and the Museum of Contemporary Art has all the nifty Calder mobiles out right now. Those are definitely worth seeing.
