The race bib number and aerodynamics

We definitely pay attention to the details around the haus.  While on the bike, I've always worn a belt and sorta stuffed mine into the back of my shorts to keep it from flapping in the wind.  Can someone clue me in to what has worked or an old thread

  • Ah yes, we've had this discussion.  Cramer has the best instructions for how to pin your race belt.  You can find it in this Thread on EN 3.0 Forums- great thread with other good stuff there too:

    Race Secrets

Two things I'll add to that advice:

    - Roadies scrunch up their bib number before pinning it on to keep it from turning into a parachute.  I now do that too, not sure it does anything, but it's a new habbit and it does seem to make it flap about less

    - Wear your race number under your wetsuit

Are we required to wear race number on bike for IM?  If so, good to know.  had not thought about that one.

  • Yes, race number/bib is required on BOTH the bike (on the back) and the run (on the front) at WTC events. I actually pre-crumple it and move it to the side on the run, so it doesn't make a "virt-virt" sound with every stride.

IMHO, it's best to wear a race belt where you can easily switch it around.
Personally, I don't wear it on the swim. Without a wetsuit, like at IMLOU, it would definitely be a pain and not very hydrodynamic (is that a word?).
  • Before wearing your number on the swim, you need to check - at Vineman they said at the pre-race meeting that the race number was made out of recycled material that would fall apart with extended exposure to water.
  • Oomph make excellent shorts that have a race number system built-in. Little velcro tabs hold surprisingly well yet I was able to yank the number and tabs off and put them on front for the run.
  • Dan
im with you, i usually tuck the number into my shorts on the bike. no flapping problems once i started doing that.
