Boston Marathon Assault Squad

It's official, my entry was accepted even though it was 2 weeks after the marathon closed. So I am already plotting.

Not going to train for this like a real marathon, but want to have fun. Thinking all you EN peeps out there bring your goggles and bikes. We will swim 2.4 on Saturday in a pool. Sunday we ride 112 either outside (4x28mile loop) or in a computrainer facility if needed. Monday we run. Points for primes in each discipline as well as best overall time? Use this to raise $$$ or awareness about something?

Thoughts?

ps - no bandits please, only folks who have qualified...

  • Oh man... just what I needed, another oppertunity to crush myself for an entire weekend. You got my attention though...

I was planning to come in sunday before the race and fly out monday... but I may be able to be convinced to get into town a little earlier.

Eitherway, I'm in for the marathon and I am also not going to do marathon specific training, just follow the OS plan and add a long run when it gets close to the race. Of course I will still have to run somewhat hard during the race.
  • Damn! I really wanted to bandit that 112 mile Computrainer ride.

  • hey, what kind of coach P bait and switch is this???? Is this how the conversation went?

coach P: "hey rich, i'm going to write this article and post a podcast/video saying not to run a marathon. i'll tell them it costs them too much in terms of training"
coach R: "well patrick, that is a good article and seems to fit what we are preaching through EN"
coach P: "yeah, and people will believe it. in the meantime, i've signed up for LP next year and i'm going to qualify for Boston at this fall marathon...."
coach R: "but didn't you just say the article was about NOT running a marathon?"
coach P: "yeah, but i'm going to get faster that way. then once i qualify, i'll put together this great challenge open to boston qualifiers only. it'll be awesome"
coach R: "but isn't that rewarding our members for bad behavior?"
coach P: " yeah, but then we'll get to see who actually listened to us. you know the weather has been terrible the past few boston weekends. i'll tell them it will be great fun, it'll be 2.4 miles in a pool and 112 miles on a trainer. should take us at least 7-8 hours each, then run the marathon!!! "
coach R: "huh? i can't......your going to what?.... riley, where are the keys to the motorbike?"

I'd totally be game for joining in on the swim and bike, and cheering on the runners.

  • Looks like Coach P is planing evil coach this year. Does this mean Coach Rich is going to have to become the good cop?

Never underestimate the audacity of the human ego.

I'd be impressed if the swim were late Sun night in, say, Hartford, and then you biked from the pool to the start as a peloton. On the Turnpike. Drafting behind an 18 wheeler.

But seriously, WHY? Boston should be about enjoying yourself in front of 1,000,000 screming people along the route. At least Matt will have enough time to recover, as IM Hawaii is six months away.

  • I have to admit it...I have a secret. I am a crazy triathlete just like all of you. I love racing. I love training. I love puting my body through hell and watching it come out the other side. To be honest I have raced 2-3x a year for the last 5 years. 2009 was Timberman and Marathon. Done. 2008 was IMCDA and KONA, done. 2007 was IMUSA and KONA, done. No olys, no sprints, no half marys, no pub runs. Some of you have raced more this year alone than I have in the last 5 years. image

So when I get the chance to race some thing special, that means a lot to the fam, well, it's a no-brainer. Am I worried about my year. Hell yeah. Do I want to get to Kona? I have lost 10lbs in 5 weeks in November...so yes I am serious. But am I going to keep it boring? No. Am I going to let you guys get away with just watching? Hell, no.

It's on. If Rich ain't racing in 2010, then I am going to do all the damage myself...or to myself...guess that's TBD.

Either way I am going to have F-U-N!

  • I'll do it with you. I'm planning to run the race with a friend slower than I might otherwise. This could be just my ticket. Who wants to lend me a bike so I don't have to lug one out there? Oh yeah, and I didn't qualify either, I got in courtesy of a friend's mom who used to be on the BAC marathon committee. Good enough to qualify as a non-bandit? I won't hang with you guys over the whole 112, but if there's a 3 up sprint between me, P, and the Halligan (never mind TinyCona) at the end I'll predict a crushing defeat for the East Coasters. Maybe Rich would come out and play leadout for me?

Bill, P is turning into tinyP.  No idea what kind of domestique frame he'll be showing up with in April.

I haven't qualified for the EN trifecta, but I might apply for sponsor's exemption.

What size frame do you ride?

    Dave

  • any of the other ladies out there planning to play in Boston?? I's got a number and till Jan 1 to decide if I wants it.

with other plans in the works, not all that interested in using it as a flat out race attempt (too close to the ToC!) but it would be a kick ass epic weekend and my A race isn't till Sept so lots of wiggle room.

I can make a 54 or a 56 work just fine.  I could always rent if anyone knows a friendly LBS.  Happy to bring helmet, pedals, and shoes out, just not keen on the extra $$ for the bike.

Ladies, please come and play! We need you to make this thing cool. I won't start hitting logistics until Jan (too busy right now), but the whole point of adding the other stuff in is to make sure I don't run too hard before TOC....and before LP, etc.  Maybe we can even hook up a post marathon beer session! image

  • I'm in for Boston as well having qualified for the first time at Marine Corp this past Oct. Unfortunately it will be on the back in a conference for work that I have to go to in San Diego and I'll be arriving in Boston Sunday morning on a Redeye flight from the West coast. I'm probably out for the weekend challenge but hopefully all the EN folks racing on Monday can meet up sometime.

  • Mark -

Want to put something together based on your arrival? That way whoever is around could attend...

    P
  • Hey P, any update on the plans for this?

I still have to book a flight and was looking to come in on the first flight on Sunday and leave late Monday (to keep the hotel costs down). However if there is a few folks that will be around longer and want to do something like Coach P mentioned, I could come in on Saturday instead.

Eitherway, I'm planning on staying in Boston around the finish area, so I definitely would be interested in meeting up with anyone else that is around on Sunday or Monday.
  • Well geez!

If that many folks are running, I just might have to take the day off and spectate. I work about 1/2 mile from the course, but I enjoyed being at the finish line in 2005.

Where would you swim? It might be a bit chilly in the lakes!

As for that 112 mile ride, well, let's just hope there are far fewer flat tires! PFFFFFFFTTT!

  • Folks I have created a group for the BMAS...please join the group if you plan on participating in the weekend in any way. That could mean the full monty or doing the Aquabike, etc. I just need to know who is in so I can begin lining up resources for the weekend...thanks!
