Passing the Torch to the Next Generation

The coolest thing about living the triathlon lifestyle is when it rubs off on the children.  My 12yr old daughter did her first triathlon today.........

  • Awww man, you made me cry in the morning. Well done and congratulations.
  • tremendous!!!  that was amazing to watch!  Those girls are fearless - I loved how they lined up front and center for the swim and just took no prisoners.  I hope that if I have kids someday they'll be so motivated!  I suspect you'll be spending your day today telling everyone your daughter is a triathlete!

  • Love it, love it!!!

  • There's not much better than watching a couple of young woman going out there and having a great time at a race! Girl Power! I love it!
  • I have had some great experiences with this too. My now-15.5 year old son has been doing tris for the last few years. We've had some special moments together. Although I am quite involved with all my kids (including coaching soccer, for example), there's something special about the triathlon experience, maybe because we can really do it together in the same role. Among some highlights (he would probably have a different list than me, but that's ok):

    - Doing his first adult-length sprint, age 12

    - The week after he got DQ'ed from a Draft Legal event with a very short bike course with guys much older than him for getting lapped on the bike, he did a hot hilly sprint race with me. He had TWO flats about half way into the bike, and was so determined to finish that he ran his bike barefoot 7 miles over the hills before doing the 5K. (He put his shoes on for that...)

    - The day he started 4 minutes back of me in an Oly race, and literally said hello as he passed me on the swim. I caught back up later on the bike, and then we got to run together for a few miles. I finished in front of him, but he won the race between us. What a day.

    - This summer, we did a team effort for a half ironman, him swimming and running. He put in a beast-quality performance as far as I was concerned. But I can't tell you how cool those 30 second encounters we shared in transitions were.

I have two more triathletes coming up 5 years behind him. I'm looking forward to it!
