hydration on the bike

I know I've seen a pic on the forum of the set up I have in mind... but don't remember when or where... so bear with me.

Due to factors beyond my control, I'm getting a new bike this week and need to rework my nutrition strategy/set up.  I've been using a dual chamber aquacell between the bars bc my old bike frame wasn't compatible with a Speedfill.  I believe my new bike will be... so I'm leaning towards getting one.  I wonder, though, how to get water.  I have behind the seat holders, but I think that will be inconvenient when I'm in aero (at IMFL, that will be most of the time) and needing to drink every 15 minutes or so... I've seen a mount that sort of rests on the bars (looks like the bottle lies there between them) - and wonder (1) how folks like that set up; (2) if it is compatible with a Joule (which will be my post-IMFL purchase); and (3) if it holds the standard bottles we're handed out at rest stops.  Assuming it will work, what are they/who makes them?

thanks!

  • @becky I am riding with a setup that you are talking about. I have the X-Lab Torpedo. It's basically a flat piece of carbon fiber that is attached to the areo bars with 4 pieces of velcro. I have a Bontrager bottle cage on it and it does hold a "standard" bottle. I have used 20/24 and 30oz bottles and I have had no problems. I have the Torpedo mounted a little off center because so that I can use my computer, with is mounted on the aero bars. It's probably off center by an inch. My biggest issue with this setup is that the bottle and my computer occasionaly rattle and i'll have to tighten up the velcro, but that is minor.
  • Becky,

    A bunch of us chimed in on this subject on this thread that Matt Started:

    New TT Bike Setup and Pictures
  • Whoa, back it up! New bike? Do tell. What kind?
  • @Chuck - thanks, I did some quick internet searching and saw the XLabs... I won't have the Joule til outseason, can I remount it easily once I have my computer?

    @Cary - thanks, I knew there was a thread but I couldn't find it...

    @Tucker -  yup, new bike... when I got back from Timberman I took my Felt to the LBS for a tune up so it would be good to go for all the miles of training I have to do for IMFL... they found a hairline fracture along a seam.  Can't be fixed.  Mechanic said it wouldn't result in a catastrophic failure but he "had to recommend" that I not ride it.  Then it he told me to mark it, watch it closely, and, in the meantime, start shopping.  I calculated the risk and decided that while it was probably okay (my guess is it cracked during my wreck last year and I've been riding it like that a while and they missed it at the last tune up), I was not willing to take the chance - after spending a couple grand registering for, getting a condo, airfare, etc. for IMFL not to mention the hours and hours and hours spent training - I would be devastated if it took me out of the race.  So, I freaked out, made peace, and emailed Todd at TTBike Fit to see if he had any suggestions on a type of frame I should look for - so I could save some time going from store to store.  I sent him my current measurements and my inseam, and a video... and the next thing I know he had a sweetheart deal on a Kestrel Airfoil Pro Special 09 bike in my size with little wheels (didn't sell well bc it's a 50 with 650s)... so, there you have it.  He should have gotten it yesterday... will be putting it together, then shipping it to me.  And he'll work with me on the fit!  Woo hoo!  The only bummer is I'm off to VA Beach this weekend and then WI next weekend... so it will be on the drainer a few weeks before I can take him out for a spin.  I'll be sure to take pics and post them when I get it... never had a new shiny TT before... exciting.  Although, I don't know if I want to take him outside, he might get dirty or scuffed up or something.

    here's a link Todd sent me with a pic of my new ride:  http://archive.kestrelbicycles.com/...%20Edition (it's probably to scale bc I'm a lil peep)

  • had a chance to look - that was exactly the thread I was thinking of... I remembered the pics!

    And Cary, sweet pic of you at EM!  I can't believe there's a water bottle in there, cool!

    The step-by-step photos from Suzanne will come in handy (so I probably will buy a new cage or take one off of my Felt or road bike).

    I just ordered the speedfill...

  • you are going to be a human missile on that new ride!!!
  • That's the plan, coach! Just wait til I start training with power... I'll be unstoppable! Or at the very least feel that way
  • New bike looks sweet! I really want to get a new bike myself. Wife said I would probably just buy myself one for my birthday. As much as I want to if I do buy a new bike I would want to go big or go home. Don't feel like dropping that kind of cash right now.
