Tempe Town Lake Updates Thread

  • I'm hoping for the north side of "mid 60's". But water temps can change fast. I swam open water in Tampa Bay just this past Wednesday and it was upper 70's. Today it is 65 due to the cold snap this weekend. Anyway, the water in that photo looked good, and mid-60s is better than low-60s!
  • Thanks for the pics. Exciting Progress. Thanks for finding and posting! Mid-60s seems decent.
  • I tweeted with Lindsey Corbin, who is in Tempe training, and asked about water temps. This is what was said:

"reported temp for OWS on Sat was 71...nekid swimmers insisted it was much colder. Wetsuits thought it was perfect."

Things are looking good for now. Getting excited!
  • Current lake temperature is 66, so it's dropping fast. I swam in the gulf today...66, no problems with that. But I'm not looking forward to low 60s though. Let's hope for clouds on the night of the 20th. Daily temperatures are posted at www.ironboomer.com.
  • As I've noted in another thread, last year the lake temp seemed to drop a degree a day in the week leading up to the race. Don't assume race day temp will be 66; it might be as low as 60, but certainly no higher than 66.

  • Well - any hope of clearer water this year due to refilling from a reservoir is gone. I found another comment about last week's OWS at Tempe Lake that said the clarity was typical from the past.
  • looks like this site gives the water temp every couple days...

    today at 62.

last year was reported at 64 on race day.  With the morning air temp maybe in the low-mid 50s, the water might not seem so bad (although getting out wet into mid 50s will be a zinger for me!)

It will be sunny and warm up quickly in the morning. You'll forget all about the "cold" while dodging all the bikers coming out of T1.

  • Bet the water will be 64 by Sunday. The next few days will be highs of 77 to 78 and the morning lows are coming up to 54...except for Sunday.

Wishful thinking. The days are too short, the sun at too low of an angle.

  • It's already happening. Ironboomer.com which is posting daily temps taken at 7am 2 ft below surface raised it to 62.5 today. If the morning lows climb as expected the water will too. Anyway, I will continue to be the optimist on this and deal with the reality on Sunday.
