marathon during iroaman training

if i do a marathon in early november and my A race is Louisville Ironman 2011 should i continue biking during the training for the marathon?

  • I would just to change up training.

  •  No reason to ever not ride.  I would suggest you go take a look at the "why we do not run marathons in the off season" or "why running a marathon in the off season is a bad plan if IM is your A race" posts/threads/blog entries as they have some guidance for how best to do it if you choose to run a marathon.

  • Mancona posted a related reply in another thread, but here's a thought.

If you do the early Nov marathon, you will probably need to wait until Dec 1 at least to start outseason. However, it looks pretty good to start roughly the first week of Dec (or even 1st week of Jan) to get your 20 week OS, 2 weeks off, then 12 week IM buildup before the end of August 2011. Obviously, it's a little tighter if you start on Jan 1 than Dec 1. In that sense, this might be the best time possible for you to do one.

Marathons are cool, but it is a different beast. I won't go on at length given what's written.
  • @Mike:

I'm doing something similar, except my marathon is in mid-October and I'm sticking to half-iron distance next year. That said, I am doing primarily run training right now. No swimming, and I continue to ride a couple of times a week. Rides are short but very intense, and I try to schedule them as two-a-day workouts on days preceding a rest day in the marathon plan.

I'll start the OS in November. Until then, I'm doing the above.
