measuring improvements

last week was testing week for me in the beginner IM training program for ironman AZ.  I am a newcomer to the haus, so I only have one test set before last week.  I realize that improvements are probably widely varied, but I was wondering if there was anything we should be "expecting" or any time frame that we should see improvements in and by how much.  It seems that maybe I technically improved an itty bitty bit (a few seconds here and there) but nothing too drastic.  Should it have been?  Ultimately I feel good about my training so far, and have been able to handle the plan pretty well (much to my surprise!).   I think I will improve, but just haven't seen anything major yet...

  • Everyone responds so differently it's hard to say. We'd like to see some improvement for sure, but in general the biggest gains are seen on the OS plans as that "work" is specific to raising FTP and vDOT. The IM training stuff is good, but not as targeted to improve those numbers. If you can handle the plan and see some improvement, I'd say you are in a good place!

  • Julia, what numbers did you actually see from the tests?

  • My swim T-pace went down two seconds, from 1:55 to 1:53.  My bike HR went from 168 to 166 (speed from 20mph to 20.1, distance 13.37 mi up to 13.4, and the first test was 40:04 with the second exactly 40:00).  Run went from 6:58 to 6:56, but HR on the run went from 178 up to 181.

  • forgot to mention also that the run vdot went from 45 up to 46.
