Garmin 310 XT more help

I just downloaded the newst 2.9 upgrade to my 310.  It says:

Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.90:

  • Implemented swim code that corrects distance values on open water swims. The distance is not displayed in real-time, but updates when the stop or lap button is pressed. This feature can be enabled only in 'Other' sport by going to Settings > Other Settings > Swim > Enabled ? Yes.

However when I try it goes like this:

Settings > options of Run Settings / System / User Profile / About Forerunner

None seem to be right.

If I try to change the sport from the main screen by holding Mode.  'Other' choice gives me a skiier with no other options for enabling swimming.

What am I missing?  I have been all through the manual, but doesn't seem to apply as this appears to be a new option.  I have a sprint tri tomorrow and wanted to try the multisport mode but sometimes this technology is more taxing than the racing!

  • I'm not sure exactly the steps you tried, but on mine it works like this.  Choose other from the sport screen, then go to settings (last option).  You'll still see the little skier at the bottom, then within settings go to "other settings" (1st option).  Then scroll all the way down and the last option should be "swim."  Choose swim, then you can click on "enabled," and choose yes or no.  Choosing yes should give you the new swim option.  Let me know if it worked!

  • Thank you!! I was able to get it to work by following your instructions.  I didn't have so much luck with using the 'auto multisport' function.  One step at a time.

    Thanks again!

  • sweet. glad you got it sorted.  What's the problem with the auto multisport?  I hardly ever use it any more because I use the lap function so much within each sport.  The technology is really cool, but like you said, you kind of have to build bit by bit.

  • When it comes to analyzing a run workout, is it better to focus on the ave pace for the lap or the NGP for the lap? I'm asking as for some laps there is a large difference and since running is not my strong suit I'm trying to avoid putting myself in a big hole. This is my first year being able to analyze my run data as i had the non-downloadable timex the past 4 years and finally bought at 310xt. I have been using the "ground control" feature for elevation correction in WKO+

For example: last nights intervals were supposed to be at 8:12/mi pace.
Interval 1= 8:29/mi NGP, but 7:49/mi ave pace
Interval 2= 8:44/mi NGP, but 7:55/mi ave pace

If I'm supposed to follow the NGP, then I'm not worried because I'm a little slow. However, if it's average pace, then I'm at least15-20 sec/mi over.

    Thanks for your help.
  • @Keith, if you did not do the elevation correction in WKO I would not trust NGP one bit. Wko ATTEMPTS to estimate the actual effort you put out and uses elevation as a major input to this, the problem is GPS elevation is not very accurate so NGP is not accurate. If you do the elevation correct it helps but I still don't think it is always right.

I would follow Ave Pace and common sense as your targets. I.E. if you are running up hill, your pace is going to slow and if you are running down hill it's going to speed up. Run you target pace in a flat area a few times and get used to what it feels like, then when you hit hills try to use that feeling to help fine tune your pace.

In your example if the intervals were more downhill than up (which the NGP implies), I would say you are probably close to the right speed or a little slow, if they were flat or going up hill then you were running too hard.
