Shoe rotation decision

So I have a pair of shoes that I planned to work into the rotation a week ago but ended up getting sick and basically sitting the last week out. Bottom line I have less than 10 miles on the shoes. They are the same shoe Ive been running in for a year but they are not broken in. Do I run in them this week then race in them or just go with the more well worn pair?

Keep me from doing something stoopid

  • While I cannot comment on your race I do disagree with the breaking in part of your shoes. I find that good shoes require no breaking in. Within a couple of minutes I forget that they are on my feet. If they are the same model and brand of shoe you have been wearing previously, there should be no breaking in required.
  • Agree with Al. That said, I face a similar situation and I've decided to just stick with the old shoes for IMWI. They will go 25.2 more miles and when I'm done with the race they will go in the trash (after I remove my orthotics of course) and won't come back home with me.
  • Agree with Al - with a caveat about type of shoes. If they feel like the old shoes, wear them. (I ran a HIM in brand new shoes. No problem.) If the model changed, and you still may get surprises, wear the old shoes.
  • I started my new shoes (same model) a few weeks ago and couldn't tell I had changed shoes. Until I shipped those newer running shoes with TBT and have been running in the older pair. They only have 240 miles on them, but I could tell that the cushioning is much less. I am very glad I changed shoes.
