Tanita model recommendations?

I started out on the Tanita site, but stopped looking after seeing about 30 of their 200 models (abundance of choice isn't always a good thing).

Suggestions?  I would imagine a model with weight and BF, unless there are other features I don't know exist but would need.

  • I am not sure there are many, if any, features that one truly needs in a scale other than weight, but I bought a set of Zipp wheels so what the heck do I know.

I have a Tanita model that shows body weight, body fat % and water as a % of body weight. It also allows three people to keep separate info. As you probably know one can really get high tech with some machines that allow download of data to iPhones, followed by color glossy charts and graphs along with a multitude of other data.

My main requirement is that the data is consistent so I can measure changes over time.
  • I got the Tanita BC 548 about five months ago and have been happy with it.  I can read the numbers easily, has a few memory settings, and body fat %.  That is about all I use it for.  Nice to have digital for precise body comp tracking.

I think it was one of the cheaper ones ($80 at amazon).  The body fat % can change more than you think on a daily basis like +/- 2%.  Need to look at body fat % over a period of weeks to get a better perspective of the trend.

  • I have had the http://www.tanita.com/en/bc558/ for about 8 months now. I like that it does body segments and that it stores data for 4 people. The data can be graphed over days, weeks and months. This is important to see the real trends as day to day reading get a bit variable. I use 2 of the people memory settings. One for pre-workout the second for post workout. This helps get the data needed for sweat tests.

Oh one other thing about this model is it has an “athlete mode” setting. It adjusts the measuring algorithms used to calculate the resulting data. They found that highly trained athletes fit a different set body composition curves than a typical person.
  • What is your goal? To monitor your weight or also body comp?

I got this one for both personal and business use: http://www.tanita.com/en/bc558/

I am happy with it. You have to be aware that the body composition measurements are done through bioelectrical impedance. This type of measurement is impacted greatly by hydration status. If you want to track body comp, you need to be sure it also measures and displays hydration status so that you can compare those with similar hydration status.
