Cyclocross???

In the week 20 podcast video cast coach P says we should be thinking about what happens after IM (for me, WI next week).  I've been watching some cyclocross on the web and think it looks like fun.  Anyone this? Chicagoland seems to have a pretty well defined circuit.

  • I did the Campton (St. Charles) race in the Chi Cross Cup a few years ago.  The race itself is all out for 30-45 minutes and can be done on a cyclocross bike or mountain bike.

I have a Ridley Crossbow cyclocross bike and ride it on the Palos mountain bike trails in the off season.  So much fun.

  • I ride those same trails on my mtb although I've stayed away the last several weeks as I just can't keep myself from doing something stoopid with Im moo on the horizon.
  • Mark: I say go for it when you are recovered and race on the mountain bike (take off bar ends). If you really like it, then maybe a cyclocross bike purchase. I will be in IMOO training, spectating, volunteering, registering so might see you then.
  • You'll find a lot of love around here for Cross. It's great winter training- hard, fast, not too long- just perfect! We only have a small handful of races around here- so its really hard to justify another bike. But I'm still scheming :-)
  • 'Cross is DA BOMB! Sooo fun! If you already ride mtb, you'll be fine in the bike handling department. Just have to practice the dismount/remounts a few times before racing. You can do a 'cross race (if you're not gunning for a podium) with a light hardtail if you don't want to buy a 'cross bike.
  • It's such a popular thing here in Madison that we actually have weekly organized group cross practice rides...one on the east side of town, and one on the west side! Gonna try my first practice ride tomorrow. Very excited!

Here's a great website for anyone in the IL/WI area... http://madcross.org

  • I have a busy month of Sept.....

Sept 18th - Racing 4's at the No Good Double Cross in Kettle Moraine (the Course is a Western Town)

Sept 19th - Masters 30+ and 4's at the Chicago Cross Cup in Jackson Park

Sept 25th and 26th - Racing 4's in/around Madison at the Grand Prix.

I'll be racing at most of the Chicago Cross Cup series unless I'm out of town for weddings. I'll have tent set up with BBQ and beerz for between races.....look for me ! Here is the Cross Cup video recap: http://chicrosscup.com/media/

Still working on my mounts/dismounts.....Lots to learn.

    Don't forget the Embro!!!

I may be joining you.....my new cross bike is being built as we speak.  I don't know if I'll be race ready this month, but maybe for some of the later season races.

  • Cyclocross is a great way to stay in shape through the winter. The races are short and fast. You peg your heart rate and keep it there until the end. Good idea to spend some time on mount and dismount, will save a lot of time and maybe a little less time picking yourself off the ground.

Remember the picture that Hayes was so kind to post of me in Chicago Athlete Magazine on the Guru fit bike?  That was me getting fit for a  custom Ti Guru cross bike.  I'm good friends with guys that own Running Away Multisport.  They set me up well and I can't wait!!!!!

  • Kitma...I can post again if you've forgotten

I went out to Montrose and practice my mounts and dismounts. So much fun. Took one time of doing the flying mount WRONG to never make the mistake again....

I was getting some weird looks jumping over imaginary barriers in the middle of a park

  • I can't wait for cross season up here!! you can race every sat + sun basically. image

I can't tell you how much fun that looks.  Its such a huge change from the uptight world of road/crit racing, polar opposites.

How could I forget custom Ti bikes, right?

My homemade 'cross barriers are 2 big orange safety cones with PVC pipe taped to them (18" from the ground as per UCI). I bought the safety cones and PVC at Home Depot. The whole thing is soft and will fall over if you hit it---unlike the real ones in the races.
