If/when they do something to your body, see the experts

I had knee problems earlier this year and ended up having orthoscopic knee surgery in June. The doctor said I didn't need PT if I was comfortable in a gym and gave me exercises to do. Was doing the exercises but not happy with progress. Began running 6 weeks post-op and had pain. Doc said to stop running for 6 more weeks and focus on quad/hip strength. Started lifting again and having some pain after lifting. Decided to go to the experts - PT - to get fixed. Had first appointment this morning and things are looking good. He said I should be able to start running in a couple of weeks. However, first we need to get the pain to settle down.

So, if you have something done and PT is discussed, GO! Find a good PT and GO! I'm now 3 months out and still having pain and not able to run. I know if I'd gone sooner, I'd already be running. Don't let this happen to you.

Everyone I have ever known who has had knee, shoulder, hip surgeries have said the same thing Penny. Go to PT and work hard at it. My friends who did not all have a greatly reduced range of motion because they did not take it seriously. My mother has had both knees replaced. THe first time, she was not hardcore about PT. The second time she was and it is amazing the difference in flexiblity and range of motion between the two.
  • Funny you posted this. Cracked my hip socket on a bad fall 8 weeks ago. Plate, pins and lots of recovery. PT in the hospital was 2 sessions, 10 minutes max. Get out of bed, check. Walk with walker, check. Walk with crutches, check and done!

When I brought up PT with the doctor he rolled his eyes back into his head, kinda laughed and said "what are they going to do, poke and massage your leg? You don't need PT. Just get better. If it hurts don't do it. 8 weeks no driving/ weight bearing and then ween yourself off the crutches slowly."

I'm sure I could get PT if I really wanted. I did sit down with Carrie for a couple of hours and got some great advice and exercises to do.

So far, no PT. Getting better everyday.
  • I've had two PT sessions this week and am thrilled that I can already notice a difference. The first goal is to get pain-free in daily living. Then, we can look at pushing it and running. They are being very adamant about paying attention to the pain and not pushing it if it hurts. Next session is Tuesday.
