crankafrm length

Setting up my new bike and the guy at the bike store suggested 172.5 crank arms.  Always used 170's before.  Inseam 82cm, saddle height 74cm.  How do you tell, or does it make much difference?

  • Bob,
You probably wouldn't know the difference, but I'd default to shorter. There are more variables involved than inseam...foot length, pedaling motion for you, cleat positioning...
  • Bob,

The is much academic debate on crankarm length. If it's for the TT position I like shorter as it helps keep the hip angle more open.

  • I've got a good article around here somewhere suggesting that shorter than you would usually use is a good choice for TT/Tri. I'm tempted to go 165 if I can find something compatible with the Quarq Saturn.
