2010 Race Season is OVER for me!

As you might or might not read over in my other thread (endurancenation.us.dnnmax.com/Commu...fault.aspx), got a call from the doc today...

Ribs #6-8 on my right side, non-displaced fractures. Four week minimum "don't do what you don't have to do".

Which means that RedMan half-iron aquabike (9/25), US Open olympic (10/10, on relay team for Team in Training/LLS) and Longhorn/Austin 70.3 (10/17) are all gone!

Can't train if I can't move. Can't move if I can't breath with any effort!  He did say that those 4-6 weeks are for anything "that causes me to use my core/ribs more than usual"; which would be ALL of the activities we do in this world of triathlon.

Will try to keep the DRC Half Marathon (11/7) and Dallas White Rock Half Marathon (12/5) on the schedule, and try to at least accomplish one of my 2010 goals, a sub-1:45 half marathon.

Of course I'm bummed and frustrated about it, but given the WAY less-than-stellar year I've had, a little forced downtime might not be such a bad thing (trying to be positive...TRYing ). This is only the second injury I've had in 7+ years of sports, so I count myself lucky in that aspect.

Guess I'll start the OS earlier than I planned...probably November.

Anything else?!?

  • Ack! Broken ribs really, really hurt. So sorry!
So did you still go on your vacation to Belize?

Rest up and heal up, Scott---we've got mountains to climb at ToC next year!
  • I busted my ribs up at the pool, at our other house (we had 24 people between two houses) on the FIRST night IN Belize. I was hurt the rest of the week, which put a little damper on some activities.

I still cave tubed and ziplined (ended up crashing into a tree too, which probably hurt them even more). The rest of the time I self-medicated with bad food and good booze.

Yes, it ALL hurts, everything I do hurts.
  • Scott... bummer... but maybe this is a good time to just entirely reset? If the half marathons fit in with your outseason, then great, but you're going to be "starting over" anyway. Think of them as early events of "next season" rather than anything having to do with this season, and I bet you'll be mentally better off. Just a thought.
  • Sorry to hear that, Scott. Rest up and recover then hit the OS!

  • Sorry to hear that Scott, broken ribs are horrible. Do whatever you can to stay healthy, I had two broken ribs and caught a cold once, everytime I caughed I thought I was going to die. Serriously wash your hands a ton, vitamin C, and whatever else you can do to not catch anything... it sucked.
  • Scott, so sorry to hear about your ribs! Damnit, that sucks! Take care of yourself and rest up! (Air) hugs to you!
  • Scott: So sorry to hear this happened. Much less on the first night of your vacation. Big SUCK! I agree with others. Take this time to allow your body to recover. Try to relax. Let your body heal or it could take longer than planned. Trust me - I'm living this one.

    Thinking of ya!
  • I agree on the reset. Unplug, become uber-sherpa / volunteer and get your head straight for 2011!!!!

  • Doode, that totally sucks. Broken ribs are like broken toes, for the most part they can do nothing for them. Good luck and relax for a while. Enjoy a nice margarita, or two, or three, or...
  • Sustaining the injury by a pool in Belize is not a bad way to go out.
    Heal up fast.

  • Are you freakin kidding me???? That sucks. So sorry Scott. But you'll be ready to rock at TOC! Rest up friend.
  • Hey - sorry to hear and I'm right there with you...Nagging hamstring problem has forced me to shut it down for the rest of the year - so volunteering at a local olympic race next week to give something back and starting to plan next year....Really hard to have to not train....
  • Bummer sux to hear that
  • Bummer.  Injuries suck!

Enjoy the down time and relax.  You will be back and better than ever in no time.

    John
