Rev3 Cedar Point Iron Distance

First I need to say that Rev3 puts on a top notch race in a fantastic family environment. My family and I arrived on in Ohio on Thursday around 500pm after traveling from Florida so we just relaxed in the hotel that evening after a quick dinner.

Friday: Up a 600am and at organized practice swim at 700am. Lake Erie was angry that day and most of the buoys had been blown loose the night before. Ended up doing a straight out and back swim for about 20 min total. I had a tough time sighting because of the chop and sun but it gave me a great idea of what I might expect race day. The owner of Rev3 was out there so after the swim I spent about 30min talking to him and the swim director. Both very nice people. Around 1000am went to pick up my bike from the shop and went for a quick 20 min ride to test everything out. After that I checked in and spent some time at the expo. That nigh Rev3 had organized a racer / family and friends only event inside Cedar Point amusement park which was great.

Saturday: Up at 630am and met my brother in law at the practice swim at 700am. He was doing his first Half and had never swum in a wetsuit until this day. There was a swim clinic at 800am which we stayed for. Quick 20 min run and off to breakfast with family. I spent the day watching football and checking in my bike while the family enjoyed the amusement park. In the early afternoon it started to rain and continued into the night but better today than race day. Take out from Outback at 600pm and lights out by 930pm.

Race day: Up at 200am and had 2 ensures. Back up at 400am for a breakfast of Coffee and a PBJ bagel. At transition by 500am got weighed in and marked right away. I help on to my transition bags the day before because of the rain so I dropped those off and got my bike squared away. Back to hotel room for a quick 30 min to relax and was at swim start by 640am. Air temp at start was mid 60's which was cold in my book.

Swim: We got really lucky and although the winds were blowing 10-15mph they shifted so the lake was like glass. This was my first mass start so I was a little nervous but found some open water and managed to make it through with minimal contact. I focused on a nice easy / steady swim and came in 80minunder my goal time.

T1: Nothing to mention here. Changed into bike shorts and got on my way. Time 5:06

Bike: It was definitely going to be a windy ride at 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25mph. Focused on JRA for first 90min and watched a fair amount of people blow by me at we headed into the county side. Picked it up a little at the 90min mark but still focused on staying at a HR of 140 bpm which is just into zone 2 for me. Nutrition every 15min via infint for a total of 260cal/hr and fluid as needed. Unfortualty coming from South Florida I'm used to drinking a ton on the bike which I definitely did not need up here in Ohio. I ended up peeing 5 times on the bike (never stopped which I'm still kind of grossed out about) but keep up with my electrolytes and figured I'd rather be over then under hydrated going into the run. The course was definite more hilly than I expected but I just keep my effort level constant and ignored my speed. The second loop was pretty challenging as the wind was coming from every which way so there was never a clear advantage. Came of the bike feeling just fine and a few minutes below my goal of 6hr. The course very well supported and while not entirely closed, there were police at every intersection managing the traffic.

T2: Uneventful and was in no rush. Time 4:20

Run: Course was a 2 loop flat run through downtown Sandusky. Felt fine starting the run and worked on keeping pace down. I ended up starting up a conversation at mile 6 with a guy from South Africa who was running the same pace and we stayed together until the finish. I walked every aid station as planned and took in 250 cal/hr via infinite and water as needed. I started to cramp a few times during the run but I just hammered some salt and felt fine. I did have to pee 3 times in the first 15miles but none after that. By mile 19-20 I was starting to get pretty tired, but I never hit that moment of wanting to quit which I was waiting for. I was ready for the line but to my surprise it never showed up. I did have moments where I needed to dig deep but walking or quitting never crossed my mind. By mile 23 it really began to hurt every time we started to run after an aid station but my running partner and I just laughed about it every time. I do think that having someone to run with made a huge difference for me mentally. Dion and I separated about 100 yards from the finish (which was inside the amusement park) so we could each enjoy our time. My 5 year old joined me across the finish line (which Rev 3 encourages) and I finished to the sounds cheering family.

  • Hey, great report. Thanks. And congratulations on a great race. Talk about "slowing down the least"; those are super-flat marathon splits!

How many people did the race? Just curious if you have any comparison to the crowding (etc) at a WTC event. Your remarks in the swim segment ("minimal contact") suggest maybe it was a lot less crowded! How about the bike course?
  • Congrats on a great race. Steady pacing works!
  • Wow- that's one great executed race! Congratulations!!! I'm also so glad to hear your kudos to the Rev3 race. I hope to give them a little support myself soon.
  • Great Race! Excellent execution.

I'm thinking about doing this race next year since it is close to where my wife grew up and her parents live about 20 minutes from Cedar Point.
  • Great execution... Congrats! I'd also like to know more about this race. I took many family trips to Cedar Point in my youth. Same questions as Mr. Jenks; How many did the race? Was it lonely out there on the run? Plenty of volunteers & aid stations?
  • There were approximately 350 for the full and 650 for the half so crowding really wasn't an issue especially on the swim. Like most races, the biggest log jam was at the first buoy. On the bike and run there were always people around but I Imagine that at a WTC event it would be much more crowded. For a first year event, I was surprised at the number of volunteers that there were. The aid stations were always full and there were plenty of places to go to the restroom. As the event is around longer I'm sure it will fill up. Even with less people than a WTC event they still managed to hype it up and deliver a energy filled race. I would definitely do another Rev3 race and Cedar Point again.

On another note, the more I think about my run splits the more I wonder if I paced it right. I don't think that I could have gone any faster in the end but I do wonder what would have happened if I pushed the pace some.
  • WOW, super day!!!! Congratulations! I think it sounds like a great race to do. Thanks for the low down.

As for lonely running-- it sure can be in lonely in FL, and that is a full-on, fully-subscribed, M-dot deal. In the end, you just ignore it and do your thing. The finish line brings welcome relief.

  • Congrats on a solid race Jason. Much like the others, I'd been considering Cedar Point for the future, have a friend who is planning to do the half next year and thinking about doing the full. I definitely want to show my support for Rev3 in the future lest we end up having to completely bend over and take it from WTC if there is no other comeptition.

In general though, you sounded much more well-hydrated in your race than I was last weekend, I stopped to pee 2x during the bike and zero times on the run despite trying to drink as much as I cold tolerate on the run. I still haven't been able to pee on the bike though, will be shooting for the 10 hour range next time though and will probably have to take the plunge.

  • Great job! Rev3 sounds cool. Congrats!
  • Excellent job on execution and vigiliant with your nutrition/hydration! Congratulations on a great race!!

Very cool to know that the race was well run. I really like Cedar Point and am planning on doing that race someday.
  • Totally perfect EN execution! Nice job. Glad to hear that Rev3 is a good race. Gotta support the independents! Congratulations
  • Anyone get sick after their race. I have not been sick in almost 3 years and here I am with a 100 degree feve,1`r cough, and a raging sore throat. WTF.....
