Todd's Harvest Moon 1/2 IM tri report
Can't quite hold to all the great IMWIS reports coming out, i've still got 10 weeks to go..
Harvest moon is a medium size race, ~500people, but heavy in competition, its a great hawaii tune up race and being close to boulder there's more fast guys here than normal.. Good competition for sure..
Quick Summary.. Great day for many many reasons, except for a run snafu which added .8miles onto my run..
Swim: 29:20
Bike: 2:14:19 #on a rolling course, yippee
Run: 1:41:03, #corrected at 1:35:03 (ran .8 miles further than everyone else, see below)..
Total Time:
4:27:32, Adjusted/Actual: 4:21:32 #PR with both times..
My goals for this race where a bit mixed:
1)test my Achilles tendon, first run >8 miles in 2 months
2)First half IM with power meter, race to plan
3)if the above 2 worked out, try and set a PR, which was previously 4:38:xx..
4)first major test since heart attack, with IMAZ looming, need to test my body and give myself confidence
Swim:
I started the swim exactly how I said I wouldn’t, I went out hard, jumped in behind the 2 leaders, stayed with them for 10 minutes but couldn’t do it, ended up swimming the rest of it all alone.. Water was cool, perfect temp, I think the swim was a little short, but not much..
Swim: 29:20 3rd agegroup, 29 overall
Bike:
Bike went very well, stayed to plan mostly which was ride at 240-245Watts, going to 265Watts on all the climbs. 30 minutes into it I was all alone, I mean all alone, couldn’t see anyone in front or in back, thought I could have gone off course. Eventually started catching the fast people in the wave’s in front of me. Near the end of the bike caught the leader in my age group(I figured someone must be in front of me), I came off the bike first in my age group, and very far up in the race. Bike went exactly as planned..
Bike: 2:14:19 25mph, 5th fastest bike time overall including pros.. Bike training has really paid off this year(thanks Ben)..
Pnorm, 245W, current FT = 285W.
Run:
My plan for the run was to start out at 8min pace for first 3 miles then try and run 7:30 for the rest, pray my Achilles didn’t act up.. I started out around 7:20, tried hard to slow down but couldn’t. Wendy and other guy in my age group were in front, no one to be seen in back. About .75miles out, some kid on the course directs us 3 to go down this trail, we all questioned him, he said yes, well, it took us back to the starting line, there we are running toward the starting line asking what the hell is going on, in sum, the kid f’d up, actually did what he was told NOT to do. We turn around and run back, net sum, for me, .8miles extra, it was corrected prior to anyone else making that mistake. Pissed I was.. I continue running around 7:25 or so, the run was pretty steady for me which was good, no Achilles issues which was great. The guy I came in with that was in my age group ran away from me, a guy in my age group passed me around mile 13. I finish the race third, about 1 minute behind the second place guy. Immediately go to the timing guy to complain.. Short story, the race director will not adjust my time, he said he can’t due to USAT rules, and its our responsibility to know the course regardless of what an official person on the race course tells us to do(yeh, that makes a lot of sense).. To note, the race course was .5 miles short to boot, I ended up running 13.3miles, most everyone else ran 12.5..
I back calculate my 12.5 mile time, that takes 6 minutes off my race which would of easily placed me second in my age group, instead I get third..
Official run time: 1:41:03 13.3 miles
Official overall time: 4:27:32 3rd in age group, 21 overall..
Adjusted overall time: 4:21:32 2nd in age group, 15th overall..
If I add the extra time for the short run, I still PR by > 10 minutes, fantastic day for me. I’m relieved, happy, had a great day even with the run issue..
10 more weeks to the big day.. Can’t wait.

Very frustrating but still an impressive perfomance with either result. 4:21 is legit as the coaches would say. Nice work!
