Mary Boyce IMWI race report

what a great day!  everything from perfect weather to fantastic volunteer help and cheering friends and family. I’m sorry for those that had some bad luck (great attitude though Linda!) and have to say I’m so impressed by all who really struggled yet still finished. you truly are ironmen/ironwomen. I had a pretty good day and many thanks to all those who helped that happen.

Swim: (1:08:04)  5 min warm-up, lined up between ramp and shore ~3 rows back, banged around for first few minutes then pretty clear whole way to first buoy, got sucked in too close at first turn and got hammered, pretty clear the rest of the way, even at turns. tried to focus on form and that worked - felt pretty good the whole way.

Bike: (6:08:43)  HRM didn’t work whole race and don’t have PM….yet…..so tried to judge bike effort off of breathing, legs, and pedal feel. tried to go easy the first loop but may have gone a little too hard because I started to feel it going up steep hills on second loop. backed off a little at that point and felt good getting off the bike. really glad I changed tubes before race as hit some bumps and RR tracks pretty hard. could make up time by knowing the course a little better, especially the downhills.  was able to stick to nutrition plan (Infinit 1125 cal), using concentrate and refilling with water at the water stations. dumped water over my head at each station too which helped the cooling system. took a few gels but didn’t eat them. nutrition plan worked MUCH better than CDA earlier this year (ate too much, gi cramps last hr of bike and whole run). thanks guys!!! bike time was 15 mins faster than CDA (run times same) so was pretty happy with the bike.

Run: (4:23:13)  first half not too bad. nutrition plan was Infinit 400cal, 2 gels and gatoraid/water as needed. ended up only drinking half the Infinit and 1 ½ gels, but was able to drink water throughout. hit the line ~mi 15, it helped to eat a gel, was probably time for the caffeineimage  what helped even more was ‘That 1 thing’….when I got to 1c the mind finally got back in the game.  the run got pretty exciting the last half mile…….a couple of women in my age group had passed me early in the run, I passed one back at SNs and the other ~mi 21. what kept me going the last few miles was that I just wanted to stay ahead of them. did stay ahead until last half mile when I glanced back and saw her right behind me, we started sprinting up State St. to the finish, she caught me running down the finish shute, we crashed into some guy right before the finish line, she grabbed my arm and we looked at each other, then sprinted to the end, don’t think I’ve ever run that fast in my life! she beat me by .25 seconds!! still can’t believe I got 3rd and came so close to a Kona slot, more motivation for CDA next year!
