Bike boost month - need help/suggestions in planning

Hey gang,

I've been looking at my 2011 year plan, which includes IMWI in Sept and a half approximately June 12 (KS or one in MN).  In another thread I got a good suggestion that I do a preseason bike focus block of some sort, as that is my relative weakness. (VDOT 51.2, FTP 228 W)

Given the dates of my races and the fact I live in Iowa, a November OS start looks like it would work well (ending mid-March). Since my A-race was already several weeks ago, and I'm not doing any fall marathon or anything of that sort, I'll be well rested and ready to hit something Oct 1, and I've been thinking about doing a bike block then before hitting the traditional OS starting Nov 1.  The weather here is such that a mix of indoor and outdoor riding is to be expected in October.

So the question is... what would this bike block look like?  No need to swim at all.  I'd probably want to at least go out for an easy run once a week just to keep me sane.  (I'm THAT GUY who thought it was easier to run after his last IM than it was to bike during his recovery period.)

Any thoughts?  Or do you think this is a bad idea before starting an OS?  (I have not gone through an EN OS before.)

Thanks.

  • How about pulling down the October OS and just doing the bike stuff for a month? Add to it if you can keep up the targets.  I would be thinking "time at FT" as your biggest bang for the buck and the simplest way to track that would be bike TSS.  Adding intensity and volume will get you there.

I posted a link to a Hunter Allen blog on getting to the next level a couple of days ago somewhere.  You can read his article here

  • Thanks for the pointer ant tip. I had been kind of thinking about the same thing, but didn't want to do something that would burn me out before the season started. Waiting for a quick reply on the season-planning/macro thread, and if it's a go, I'll be doing something of this sort.

  • I'd make your bike roadie worthy and find every group ride in your area and suffer for a month. Keep it loose, do what they do, ride longer when you feel good and shorter when you don't!
  • William, I'm kinda doing a similar thing right now. Basic plan is

    Day 1) 2x20 (4') FTP
    Day 2) 1x20 time trial
    Day 3) easy/ rest

    Repeat

Trying to muster up some last minute bike fitness I have lost since LP for q season ending sprint. Probably run it through a Halloween duathlon I'm planning on.
  • I like Coach P's idea.

Will be converting my tri bike to a road bike this weekend and ride HARD through October and start OS in November.

2-4 days of cycle commuting / week (40 km round trip) at a good clip on a heavy steel bike and Saturday morning hard rides with cycling clubs.

    Best of luck.
