Strength Training

I know the coaches don't recommend strength training except perhaps for "older" individuals.  I'm 51, so I'm officially middle aged.   At what age should one start to consider strength training?

  • Hi Vicki,

We feel that's a conversation best had between you and your doctor, not you and two triathlon coaches/clowns you met on the internet . That said, we have a full on Medical Help forum that several MD types on the team monitor and we have a many senior-types on the team, some even older than you (! ) who will be happy to give you there advice.

  • Well, my doctor thinks I'm in phenomenal shape, so I'm not going to get much advice from her. I do know that when I was in my 20's and at my current weight, I was a lot leaner, so I know I've lost muscle (and gained fat) over the last 25 years. I still feel like I'm a youngster, but my body fat scale tells me otherwise! I'm just wondering if it would help my performance overall or if it is still a poor ROI.
  • Vicki,

What kind of strenght training are you thinking?  Personally I think for any woman of any age, some form of strength/resistance/core training is very beneficial.  Now, if you are thinking body building, that in my opinion for an endurance athlete, is not necessary and would not be ROI.   I rarely got into the free weight room this past year ( that used to be my thing in the day) instead because I did not have that much time, I would do lots of pushups, core exercises, pull ups, sit ups ( many varieties) and I belong to a club that has a plethora of core/strengthing type classes that I love!  So, if your doc says A ok and u can fit it into your schedule....go for it!

  • I do some core work now, but was thinking perhaps I should be doing one-legged squats, lunges, step ups, etc.  I've never really enjoyed weight lifting or body building...cardio is my thing!

Not a direct answer to your question, but if your considering doing a lower body strength workout within EN, you have to think about how that weight lifting session may compromise your ability to hit your bike workout intervals.  The EN bike rides are quite hard and redefine how most people think about "work" on the bike, especially in the OS.

Squats and lunges are fine...but you will probably get enough cardio through the EN training plans...no need for extra here. My 2 cents.

  • Vicki- I doubt you'd need to do much lifting stuff for your legs. Between the running and biking in the OS and IM plans I put on lots of muscle mass in my legs. Really don't see the need for leg work. This OS I'm planning on adding some upper body strength training into my routine. Especially since there is no swimming, it shouldn't be that difficult to just combine it with the core work without taking away from the OS workouts.

For sure Jennifer...exactly what I did last year in OS....but also did leg stuff like lunges and squats...didn't seem to interfere with OS training...depending on the day :&#160image
