Which Quarq?

I could have sworn I saw this exact topic before but just did a quick search and must have missed it. Anyway, just wanted to do a quick informal poll of Quarq owners and see which flavor each of you has opted with?

Background, I'm planning on selling my current Cinqo Saturn built on a FSA Team Issue crank with 172.5mm arms and FSA Super Road 53/39T rings. I'm selling it to help fund my purchase of a compact instead, and  I did contact Quarq first, the 110 and 130 BCD Quarq's are mechanically different so I can't 'convert' it to a compact.

I'm leaning towards the SRAM S975 with 172.5's again and of course 50/34. Theres always FSA SL-K and of course Rotor 3D in compact as well. Rotor has always seemed some what gimmicky (and expensive) to me so I wouldn't lean that way unless anyone has really good experience with them, and while I've never had any problems with mine people often complain about shifting performance on FSA. Speaking of shifting performance. I'm assuming the S975 shift quality is still good with a Shimano chain / drivetrain?

  • Trevor, all of the options you mentioned are so close you can't go wrong with any of them and I bet will not notice a difference between any on them other than looks. I personally have a SRAM, because I'm anal and like having the matching group.

If you are happy with FSA, you can stick with that, otherwise I would recomend the SRAM S900. I have not rode a Rotor, but have heard great things.

For a compact I think it is a waste to pay extra for a S975 when you can get a S900 for about $200 cheaper. The S975 is only a few grams lighter and comes with the same force rings as the S900 in compact. If you were getting BB30 or standard 130BCD, then I think the $200 more for S975 is worth it. Just my opinion.

Becky had a similiar post that I provided some more info on.
  • I recently went with a sram975 compact quarq with shimano drive train, works great.   Previously had the standard s900 quarq which I'm most likely going to sell.

  • The Rotor is cool and I've seen/heard good things on ProTour but it's by far the most expensive at almost $2200. It would have to practically ride my bike for me at that much. I'd have a hard time justifying the SL-K either at $1900, and you're right, for the price difference the S975 would have to be tangibly better than the S900 to justify (for me at least) since I would be going GXP. Seriously considering the prices, I guess that was my only real debate. S900 it is then, assuming I can ever push myself to take the plunge. Debating about waiting until after the winter indoor season to upgrade.
  • I have a SRAM S900 50/34 for IM and the mountains and a SRAM S975 53/39 for flat TTs. Both are 175 mm crank arms.
  • I have the Lightning compact carbon crankset - 170's. The Rotors are bad a$$ but did not come in a compact when I bought mine.
