Cross Country Program
First, let me say congratulations to all of the EN Peeps who toed the line at IMWI. I followed the Team the whole day and have been slowly reading through the race reports. It sounds like it was an absolutely amazing time, and that every one had a great day. It really is amazing how much a community like EN can come together to support people you only know from a photo and some online posts.
Now for my question. Both of my kids (10 & 5) are back in school. One for the very first time. I try to be an active parent and stay up-to-date on how the school functions and what they have to offer. In addition my 5-year old has started playing recreational soccer.
I have noticed that neither the schools or the community supports anything involving running. This may change once they hit high school, but that is in quite a few years. So I have come up with the idea of starting a community running program. I think I would like to focus on just cross country/endurance running for the time being. There are already some private clubs that provide track and field programs.
This is where you can help me. I am wondering of anyone on the Haus may be involved in something like this. I am looking for some pointers on how best to start the program. Training programs, methodology? Who should I talk to in the community to get approval, spread interest, etc? Is there any special training recommended or required?
For now I am just trying to put some thoughts down on paper. As I continue to work out some of the details I will come back to the Haus for suggestions, comments, feedback.
Thanks for everyones support!
Pete

My 6 and 8 year old are "trainig" for the Monster Mile at my wife's next 10K. We are doing run and walking intervals to keep it light and fun. The kids are running on the off soccer/football days and making progress. We started with running 1 minute and walking 2.
My Cousin Sammantha is involved in a program http://www.gofarclub.org/ that helps set up a runnning program for kids just like you asked about. I believe they also do nutrition and more. Look at there site and send Sammantha a message I am sure she would be happy to talk to you about the program.
