Garmin 500 - Speeding up Satellite Acquisition

I started using the Garmin 500 in races this year.  The first thing I do in T1 is hit the on button but it's still acquiring as I head onto the bike course.   Is there any way to speed it up?   If I hit the start button before the satellite locks, does it start tracking time even if it can't track distance??   I know there are some tech-savvy people in the haus who can give me some tips!!

  • I have always turned on the edge before the race when setting up my bike, this way it is all ready to go and all I have to do is hit the start button. Out of curriousity, why would you not do this as the battery easily lasts more then 17 hours for me?

If you must have it off, I would let it fully acquire a signal before the race from the exact location you will be turning it back on at (the bike rack).

  • Great question Matt...duh on my part! I did not turn it on because I thought it powered-off automatically after 10 minutes or so. I will turn it on tonight and see what the dealio is. Doh!
  • The default is for it to shut off after 10 minutes or so. You can simply disable the auto shut off.

Don't feel too bad, in my first race with it, I wondered why the thing shut down once I got into T1. image
