Cheryl, I am so sorry to hear of Al's crash! I haven't been on the forums for a few days, so just found this out. Al has been such an inspiration and source of wisdom and support for all of us. Please tell him that I appreciated his kind words after I had to DNF IMLOU, and he has all of my support!! Sending him and you, lots of healthy, healing, positive energy!! Take care of yourself, and I know that Al will 'wow' the docs with his recovery!! Hugs to both of you!!!
So sorry to hear this news. Wishing you all the best in your recovery. If you recovery tenacity is anything like your racing skills I'm sure you'll be back in record time. Take care and get well soon.
Al, so sorry to hear about your crash. Facial injuries to the extent that you needed a trach means you had a potential life threatening airway problem. Really fortunate to be able to get help right away. Now the had part, waiting for recovery to happen. Don't try to rush it.
I could barely bring myself to read past the subject line. I can't add anything that hasn't already been said very well in the comments above so I'll just echo it all - Al is an absolute treasure in these forums and his presence will be sorely missed until he returns. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Al wants me to express his/our gratitude for the overwhelming support and concern he (and our family) has received from this team. The extent of his injuries is largely known at this point and his prognosis for recovery is felt to be excellent. Again, care providers have been impressed by his conditioning and determination. Al is still in ICU care but will be stepping down to a progressive care unit as soon as he gets transferred to the local community hospital (maybe tomorrow). Al will take a 3 month disability leave for full-time rehab and then will go from there.
Many of you want to know how to help. I think the most important thing will be to share your own news in your emails. That will help him stay included rather than being absorbed in the more narrow road required in recovery.
We will be updating this thread at least every Saturday.
Warmly, Cheryl

Thanks for keeping us updated, thought about him yesterday and today. wow 3 mos recovery. well several EN members have been doing just that! maybe Al wants to start "another" forum = Road to Recovery!! 3 mos puts that about Christmas so I know that will be one of his goals given his determination and desire to be fully functional for family Christmas time! m
What great news, thank you so much for the update. I'm so relieved to hear the prognosis is good. I bet Al has already started to figure out if 3 months will give him enough time to get in some skiing this winter!
I am sorry about the news I have just read. You are a strong person mentally and physically, so I am not surprised you continue to impress and share your knowledge even while in ICU.
If this has to be done, it will be great to hear about Al's road to recovery! Can't wait to be inspired by him! This prognosis is wonderful! Thanks for the update!!!
OMG - I've been away for a few day and I just read this - Al!!!!
As you can see by the number of responses, Al is a huge figure here inside EN and is well respected by all of us. I wish him the fastest of recoveries.
So sorry to hear about this awful bike crash and happy it wasn't any worse. It sounds like Al is on the road to recovery. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I guess Al is inspiring the team in a different way now. Thank you for the update.
Cheryl--tell Al it will be a happy day for all of us when he can check in here again himself! Sounds like that thousand mile recovery journey is beginning with the first step. Good to hear!
Paul is our point man, age wise, and appears to also be our point man, serious injury wise as well. And while I suppose that many in his AG who are headed to Kona this year can relax just a bit, I am certain that they also know that he will be back!
The news made the hair on the back of my neck stand up...it's too scary. Someone here once wished they had Al's toughness...I know he'll do everything he can to recover fully. C & A, our thoughts are with you .
Just wanted to send another note your way, Al and Cheryl, and let you now our family is thinking about and praying for your family and your recovery! Hoping we hear good updates tomorrow! I've been thinking about you all this week!
Wow, what awful news. So sorry to hear this. To echo what many others have already said, I had to smile when I heard Al was "pissed off"...glad the fire and fight is in there! I often skim through many of the forum discussions as there is so much to read, but when I see a post by Al, I stop skimming and READ. He is so forthcoming with his wise advice and considering what a talented and successful athlete he is, I am so grateful that he takes the time to encourage and share with BOP'ers like me. Positive thoughts and energy your way Al, Cheryl and family!
