Peddle unscrewing from crank arm

About 5 minutes into my ride today I find my left foot clipped into the peddle, but the peddle completely detatched from the crank arm.

I got off the bike (can't believe I didn't crash) and screwed the peddle back on again, not being too concerned about how tight it was (I thought the idea was that you didn't have to tighten the peddles much 'cause they would automatically tighten as you ride).

Another 5 min later and there I am with one leg dangling from the bike.  It seems like the peddle was unscrewing as I rode (which I thought was impossible).  I ended up riding back home on one leg just to be safe.

Anyone have ideas of why this might be happening?  Perhaps something is stripped in the peddle threads?  When I got home I used a peddle wrench to tighten it down and then went out for another 15 minutes of easy riding around the block to see if it was OK- and it seems to be fine now.  But I'm a little nervous about it.  Just wondering if a trip to the LBS to take a look (and/or purchase new peddles) might be in order.

  • Is this the bike you used in WI? Did the pedals get removed/replaced with the bike shipment?

Make sure your left pedal is in your left crank arm, and your right pedal is in the right. The threads on the pedals are intended to tighten, if they're pointed the right direction!
  • This is Hobbs, the road bike (Fiona is on the FedEx truck for delivery today). He hasn't seen a travel box since TOC in May- and I've ridden him a lot since then. I did double check that the left peddle is on the left side .
  • WTF. No idea how this could happen, seems impossible. I do know, however, what it's like to have a catostrophic failure of cleats/pedals while sprinting all out at 32mph. Worn, broke ass cleat came unclipped, I went down and broke my collarbone. Fall '01. So, yeah, get it looked at. Hopefully it's the pedal, not the crank = relatively cheaper.

If you ride old style Looks, not Keo's, I have several pairs laying around.

Well thankfully I was going just a little under 32mph so I didn't go down   But yeah, the whole concept seems impossible to me too.

Will take to the shop to have it looked at- thanks!  If it's the crank, I can always switch Hobbs back to 9speed with the triple since I still have those components lying around.  Might be nice to have the triple at TOC (and possibly Savageman) too
