Metrigear is dead. Long live Metrigear

  • I think it's a great buy for Garmin. I wish them luck.
  • Saw that earlier tonight. Wonder if it will ever actually come to market. Garmin must think so and can probably help make that happen. I was beginning to have serious doubts
  • I thought this pedal power thing was just a myth. Stay tuned I guess.

  • Great purchase for garmin, polar also announced a similar pedal power system with Look.  It looks like the technology is the same.  A while back metrigear removed the references they had to speedplay pedals, i'm wondering if they licensed their technology to look then sold to garmin, thats got to be it unless Look stole their idea and put some engineers behind it.  I can't believe that system doesn't have a slew of patents on it(especially coming out of silicon valley).  There's no doubt its coming, good for everyone. So much for the power training advantage i've had over the general population..

  • Polar no ANT+?!?!?! WFT! Closed systems are so 90s.
  • I really hope this comes to fruition.  I think with Garmin behind it the likelihood is much better.  Hurry up and wait I guess....

  • Folks, as a guy who's been in the PM biz a long time, I highly, highly, highly recommend:

    1. You don't wait on Metrigear if you want to train with power. In my experience, these product launches can be delay, delayed, and delayed some more but you training and racing season is not.
    2. You do not want to be a first generation beta tester for these things. Give it a year. Let the bleeding edgers buy one, bang on it, deal with the bugs, prove it out, etc...then swoop in and buy one used or buy Gen2
  • Garmin is none-too-fast, either! They tend (at least on the software side) to put out something that "works" and let the users be the beta-testers. Don't get me wrong about Garmin...like their products a lot... but you just can't deny that they stick stuff out there and then try to work out the bugs.
  • FYI - DC Rainmaker posted Analysis and Discussion with Garmin and MetriGear about new Vector Power Meter - a very informative article / interview with the power folks at Garmin. Good Read.
  • Thanks for posting that link Cary. Was a good read. Hope it actually pans out.
  • I love new technology, but for mission critical components (i.e. a power meter) I have to agree with Rich. I personally monitor the wattage group after a new product comes out. If a product survives that group for a few months I consider it ready for prime time.

I think the Garmin/Metrigear solution will be awesome but it will still be a while and based on garmins track record may take a few tries to get right. They will get it right eventually though.
  •  I was following the metrigear news/blog and think the product will be very cool.  Having Garmin behind it can really only be a good thing.  Those boys have the money to bring it to market and I am sure they did not buy it unless they have a plan to do just that.  Time will tell on the functionality and the price point.  I certainly would not count on it being available any time soon.  Best case pie in the sky would be next summer.  If they were anywhere close [or even knew had any idea what the thing is expected to look like] there would be a working prototype or even a mock up at interbike this week.
