Flexibility with the weekly schedule...

Starting next year, I'll be working a schedule that will lend itself pretty nicely to my tri stuff.  I'll be working two 12hr days (7a-7p) and a 24hr day (7a-7a).   Luckily, as the day winds down, I'll be allowed to hit the Lifetime gym that is right across the street until something requires my presence back at the hospital.   The 3 days of work will rotate throught the weeks.  I'm curious as to how much this will SCREW up my EN plans.  I expect I will be able to get some work in before I go in to work.  And, I expect, that there will be plenty of opportunity to get some shorter work in during the evening of working.  Are these EN plans going to fit into this kind of work schedule?  Is flipping days during the EN week going to be difficult for me to manage?

Thx,

Chris

  • Chris, the fact is that ANY plan or resource you use will need to be worked around your schedule. We're biased, but we feel our plans are very, very good, as a base, and then as a member you can work with us in the Micro Thread to help you manage tweaks in near real time. Hopefully you've seen how we and the team us that tool and I expect that after 3-4 exchanges between you, PnI, you will have figured out how to manage it yourself.

  •  yeah, I'm very confident that this will work great for me.  I've been flipping my "self coached' plans around work for years, and those plans were longer and stupid-er!   I wouldn't be surprised if the biggest problem I have is doing too much extra on my days off.  I'm lucky that I'll have  4 days off during the week now, and that I only have 3 days on at work to have to squeeze training into.

Off Topic, but since I have your attention,  I have NO clue as to my race schedule next year.  I am going to try the Hawaii Lottery.  I like to keep the number of races very low, 1-3.  If I hit the lottery (big if), that's my one A race, one peak.  If not, maybe Silverman or B2B in Wilmington.  Nonetheless, peaking for something in Fall.  So, when should I start the OS?  Are you going to insist I put this in another thread?  (I'm 'starting' to see how these EN forums work.).

Dude, I'm already luvin' this place.

    Will be ending trial early.

  • :-) Chris, yeah, you should start another thread. :-) But since it's YOUR thread that you are hijacking, I'll let it slide!

With a fall A race, you are going to have a really looooong season. Do you have any other early season races to plan for? Maybe a Half Mary or HIM in the spring?

If you've got some mid-term goal in mind for the spring/early summer, then start the OS in Oct. But if nothing is on the calendar or targeted until Fall, then I'd say wait until Jan= otherwise you are gonna burn yourself out.
  • Chris,
I work a pretty similar schedule, I'm a firefighter and work 24 hrs on duty 48 off. Rich did a podcast called the basic week. I would give that a listen, I don't have a link but pretty sure you can find it on Itunes.
That being said, before next year April I need to hammer out 3 different basic weeks since the 24/48 schedule "renews" or repeats itself every three weeks. One week we work monday thursday sunday, week 2 wednesday saturday, week 3 tuesday friday.
  • HI Nemo,

I think that next year might roll like this...

Spring century, Brasstown Bald Buster in N GA

    Summer Oly in Chattanooga

Fall century, Six Gap in N GA

Fall long dist tri, 'A' race...Hawaii (Big IF cuz its lotto), Silverman, or B2B.

At this point, that's a pretty full year for me.  I love the training as much as the racing.  But, some years I get burned out on the hassle of racing (packing, travelling, setup, breakdown, travelling, unpacking, keeping the crew happy throughout, etc).  That's where I'm at now.  I've learned that I max out at 2-3 races for a year.

And, trust me, this won't be the last time you see me veer off of the original topic!  Hey, look, a squirrel.  Anyway, thx for the help.
