Pacific Crest Oregon
My sister-in-law sent me a webpage about the Pacific crest half-iron at the end of June 2011. It looks very pretty and the upside is I would get to see my family in Oregon before, during and after the race.
The downside is, I live at sea level,( I think at about 50 feet or less above sea level) and the race starts at 4200 feet. I might be able to do some training in PA but that is not exactaly altitude. There are some big hills on the bike, followed by something like 14 miles of downhill and the run is flat. I will be able to get a compact gear for my bike and this would be a good test of my EN biking and climbing skills, which I have been focusing on for the last two months.
The swim is at 4200 feet and I have heard that swimming can be very difficult when you cannot get enough O2. I'm a good swimmer, 35 min for 1.2 miles but a friend of mine who swims as well as me said that the only time she thought that she would drown was in a race was one that was in the mountains.
Any thoughts? Has anyone done this? How could I prepare for this, and how early do you think that I would I need to go there to be physically prepared to have a happy day?
