Waiting for Nov OS...what to do til then?

What does your 'typical' week look like from now til Nov?  Is there a 'basic week' template out there that I'm missing, or do you just follow a similar pattern to the OS (mon-off, tues-brick, wed-run...etc) at self-directed intensity until then?

Thanks

Andy

  •  Mine looks like munchkins and a plain bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese.  Pizza for lunch.  Lots of red meat for dinner and some kind of bad carb washed down with scotch!!!  I only do this every other day though.  You could start on Monday or Tuesday, but I take Sundays off.  Sorry for the bad humor, I'm just so happy to have a guilt free week off that I don't want to think about the OS yet.  But I'm sure anything that gets you out the door for at least an hour 3x's a week for the bike and a couple x's for the run with short intensity work should do fine.

  • Agreed. I use this time to catch up with some friends and run or bike since I really don't have much of a chance to do this during the season. It's a lot of pretty "lazy" work that basically is there to compensate for the food and beer I'm downing image
  • Andrew, guessing your mentally ready to get going with this EN/OS stuff. A lot of us are fresh off our A races and just taking some non focused sorta chill out time right now.
  • If you are looking to be active, I suggest you find either fun or foundational stuff to do. Fun = exercise with others with no goals, do their workouts. Foundational = strength, stretching, yoga, core work...all the prep to make your training more effective!
  • In EN we like to have "fun with our fitness" when we have down time.  Swim, bike, run, trail run, ultra-run, ride a charity event, do a swim race, whatever.  Enjoy it now cuz when December/January hit you will be wishing for the down time.

  • I think it all depends on what you have done for the last month or so, your level of fitness, and what you WANT to do know.

Don't feel like you have to do anything, however...

If it's been a while since you were doing structured training, it may work well to do a month of pre-outseason type work with the same scheudle and frequency of workouts as the OS but less intensity.

If you just came off doing an IM or other A-race, take some down time and just recover.

All of this will vary by individual... i personally HATE downtime and can't stand to take time off.
  • Im planning this period to be making up for lost time onthe mtb and dabbling with this cyclocross thing
  • Here's my off season plan until Jan OS:
If there's no rain and the trails are dry = mtb.
    If it snows = mtb.
If it snows alot = mtb with studded tires or skate ski
If it rains = practice riding 'cross in my yard...slippery off camber turns, overcoming the braking power of my stoopid canti brakes.
Not weather dependant = trail running.

If my dog looks at me beseechingly = take Scooby to park to jump in pond ASAP. He's the only one who swims in OS and off season. image
  • My plan, thinking January OS start.

Until October, or so. Yoga bum.
After that - feed my inner runner and train for a January 1/2 mary + send my inner swimmer to reform school. . .er lessons.
  • Light running and having fun on the bike for me. I seriously need to find a good swim coach. :0
  • Letting the ribs heal (still riding easily, running as soon as I can), while still coaching/captaining multiple Leukemia & Lymphoma TNT tri and cycling teams.
  • .... trying to get rid of this damn ITB issue that re - emerged at Muskoka 70.3

Massage, ice, pt exercises, etc etc.  So much fun

  • Thanks everyone! Fun and Functional sounds like the plan
  • Andrew, I felt the same way when I joined this time last year - roaring to start. I did a lower intensity version (same days, less work) of the OS as per Matt's suggestion. After 1 year in the Haus now I am happy for the break. I have a few local 5K's and a half-mary scheduled but all is just for fun. Welcome to the team.
  • You can also get an overview of the OS plan by joining the October OS, but just doing some of the workouts to get an idea of what's involved. Mix it up with other fun stuff and then when November rolls around, the work begins!
  • yoga and pilates. Trying to get rid of nagging injuries and go into OS strong.
