Aeolus, PowerTap & Quarq

Hi All,

New member here...really glad to be part of the team.....Like a lot of new members, I’m looking to purchase a power meter (and pretty baffled by it all, to be honest !!).

I don’t particularly want to replace my back wheel as I have a nice set of Bontrager Aeolus wheels & according to my LBS, it’s not possible to rebuild a Aeolus wheel with a Powertap ....

Can anyone validate this?

If I can’t, I’m looking to go with a Quarq – most people seem pretty happy with it. If I do switch to the Quarq, is there any reason I WOULDN’T install on my existing Crankset (SRAM Red 130 BCD 53/39 172.5 cranks) and save myself $200-$350 rather than buy one of the new cranksets listed?

Thanks....

  • Not sure about the Aeolus, but I know my Race Lite Bontrager Wheel couldn't be rebuilt with a PT because Bontrager uses a proprietary lacing paired system that won't match up with a standard PT. It could be your Aeolus has that same issue.

Will let a quarq person confirm, but I don't think you can just install it on an existing crank.
  • I believe the Saris states the PT requires a 3X lacing pattern to be accurate and for them to support it and my guess is your wheel does not have enough spokes to do that.

For the quarq, no you cannot use a red crank. Only the S900 or S975 work as they have removable spiders that replaced byt the Cinqo. The good news is you current BB will work with the new crank.

Also, before buying a crank you may want to search for ironman gearing in the forum or wiki as Coach Rich explains why everyone should be riding a compact for IM racing.
  • I had 2008 6.5s before joining EN and it's true that you cannot have a PT laced in after market...I'm 20 miles from Saris and 20 from Trek, and there was NO WAY to get it done! The paired spokes require a PT specifically drilled for the wheel.

I had to buy a new rear w/PT. I use the 6.5s for outdoor training and racing, and I'm getting a CompuTrainer for the winter.

  • All - thanks for the great feedback and advice re: Ironman gearing. Given that I don't fancy a a kick in the nutz, I'll probably go for the quarq on a compact crank.

Martin - you must be down the street from me .....I'm 10 miles from Trek !
  • Andy,

You will want to get a compact crankset also to keep power spikes down.
