Integration of OS Plans and HIM Plans

 RnP,

I have been very impressed with your philosophy and I am thinking hard about  joining the team.  I am doing IM FL 2010 and for 2011 tentatively planning:

70.3 Buffalo Springs

70.3 Austin

When would I start the OS Plan and how would that be integrated into the HIM Plan in preparation for Buffalo Springs? Do you suggest completing all 20 weeks of the OS Plan, first? For example, if I started the OS Plan Jan 4, race day would be 26 weeks away. I also travel a lot for work, but understand we can see the prescribed training sessions for the weeks ahead so modifications can be made accordingly.

Thanks,

Jason

  • I'd cut a paste your question into "The Macro Thread: I have big picture, season planning questions for the Coaches
    Rich Strauss"

RnP will respond back very quickly.
  • Generally HIM plans you can drop in anywhere from 4-8 weeks. So you could do 20 weeks of OS, 1-2 weeks transition, and then 4-5 weeks of HIM plan. It just depends on whether you've done the HIM distance before. OS is where you build your fast, and since the end of the OS adds more far, it's pretty easy to drop into the HIM plan that close to the race (as opposed to the IM plan where it's more like 8-12 weeks of IM plan).

    Hope that helps!
  • Hi Jason!

In an ideal world, you should shoot to get in all of the time in OS that you possibly can (20 weeks), take a transition week or 2, then start "general prep" for a period of time followed by 12-20 weeks of "race prep" (for your A++ race, IMFL).

FWIW, I'm doing IMFL this year and joined last Dec... I started OS in mid Jan (a few weeks late due to an injury) and got 14 weeks of OS in before skipping out early and doing the last 6 of HIM prep to get me ready for Eagleman in June (I took a week of transition after the HIM, then did 8 weeks of general prep, the last 5 of HIM prep for Timberman, then jumped into IM prep).  So far, this has worked out really well for me and I was definitely ready for both HIMs and will be ready for the IM.

I'm not sure when your first HIM is, but per the coaches and WSMs (wicked smart members), you can be ready for the HIM in 4-6 weeks following HIM.  I've done it and am a believer.

There's a wiki post regarding when to transition out of OS that you might fight interesting, it talks about this stuff... how to plan your season, etc.

  • @Becky, FYI, trial members can't see the Wiki.

@Jason, visit our blog and look for a post I wrote a few weeks ago about how to stack our plans across a season. You would be doing that in here, but with our help.
