calf ok, knee & "hip" not so much

What the heck is going on with me?  I nursed the calf I strained two weeks ago back to health, and I don't feel it at all - no soreness, nada.  I eased back into my training program and just got back up to speed.  During this time I was very specifically not limping or favoring it so as to not create any new injuries.

On Friday I started to feel a funny dull pain/soreness in what seems to be my right hip, but on my back side, close to my lower back, but not quite.  It's almost like it's the right edge of my tailbone or something.  And it is not going away and now every time I walk I can feel it.  However, I don't feel it when I ride or run. (?)

However, yesterday on my ride I felt a distinct something in my right knee.  It's on the inside, right between where I would imagine the kneecap and socket meet - my medial meniscus?  So I slowed down, and still felt it.  Quit my zone and just decided to spin easy for the rest of the way to get home.  I could not even do this.  I had to hitch a ride home.  I iced it well when I got home.

Today my knee is not sore at all but that hip just sucks.  I was afriad to do my assigned ride with my hip saying hello at every step.

I have never, everevereverever, had this many issues with injuries & pain.  Maybe I didn't "ease" in enough?  I got bike fitted ~2 months ago, could it be something in the fit that isn't working out?  I'm on the small side - could it be that my body just can't take this way of training?  Have other small women had these issues on the beginner IM training plan...?

Thanks for your thoughts...  I think part of me just needed to vent and let out my upset & frustration.

  • Holy moly, can't imagine that the trainnig is making your body implode like that, but it could be the effort is exposing some issues with your fit. While we wait for the experts to post, can you fire up a few pictures of you on your bike in the aerobars for us to look at?
  • This isn't medical advice...just commiseration. image

Last year, I had a new bike fit---an awesomely wonderful bike fit that had me low with drop and going alot faster for the puny watts I was churning out. I rode that new position on the trainer during OS for 2 months with no problems (trainer rides lasting no longer than 90 minutes). I had noticed that my right hip was a bit tight, but figured my joints are so lax I didn't need to stretch, foam roller, or go to yoga. When the weather got nice, I rode for 4 hours in the new position. The right hip tightness lead to a horrible lateral quad/ITB problem that basically stopped me from running for 10 months. I had to drop out of IMC.

So my cautionary tale to you is: Go see a PT or chiro who does sports medicine or a sports medicine doc and figure out what the problem is and how to fix it. For me it was months of ART and stretching/foam rollering like it was my job.
  • yes coach P that is *exactly* how I feel.  Like my body is imploding.

Since yesterday I have seen my sports med doctor and he is sending me to PT.  It's the area where my tendon & glute meet right below the iliac crest that has been strained.  At the moment I have a pretty horrible difference in balance that may be due to the injury, even though this balance test doesn't hurt.  If the balance issue is not due to the injury then that is definitely a major source of my problems because after all, the knee bone is (indirectly) connected to the hip bone.  The recent bike fit may have just brought that out...

I don't have any pics of me on my bike since the fit, but I will see what I can do tonight at home and post.  Have made a follow up appt with my bike fitter, but I couldn't get in until next week.  (arg)  Trying to ice lots and use topical antiinflammatories...  (still hurting though)

  • The two are most definitely related. While the injury may have healed in terms of soreness, there's a lag in getting your full strength and muscle coordination back. Combine that with EN type intensity too soon and boom! something else can break down under the increased work load. image

You should try to get the MD to order up PT for both your calf and hip. Put that insurance to work and get the most out of it.
  • Julia,
sorry for jumping in petty late.
with your knees straight, can you touch the floor with your palm? I'm guessing not.
if your doc didn't check for it, point it out to him to see if you have any hamstring tightness

  • To my surpise, I actually can put both palms on the floor with my knees straight...  When I had a fit assessment thru my gym last year I was told that my hamstrings & lower back were tighter on the right than the left.  So I am not sure then where that stands now if I my palms touch the floor?
