Just tri-ing to understand how this works

Hi,  I have done 2 IMs, definitely disappointed with my last time of 16:41 at IMLP.   Have IMLou 2011 on my radar.  What is the OS?  How long do you recommend it?  And finally when would you see me starting to train for IMLou?

Thanks!

Hi,  I have done 2 IMs, definitely disappointed with my last time of 16:41 at IMLP.   Have IMLou 2011 on my radar.  What is the OS? OutSeason where the peeps in the haus train Fast before Far with high intensity workouts on bike and run.  Only swim if u want, but it is not included in plans.  though there is a swim hack in the wiki.  How long do you recommend it? RnP normally say 20 weeks, but really depends on your A race.  And finally when would you see me starting to train for IMLou?  Well, Im not R or P, but will take a stab at it (you could post this in the Macro training thread for trial members to get their feedback)....so last year I started the outseason Nov 1...20 weeks brought me to Mid April.  Two weeks tranistion ( RnP recommend a 2 week recovery break after OS because your body will need it : ....broke my season into two....A HIM race June 12....so after transition jumped into 10 weeks of race prep....then a week off after HIM and jumped into 12 weeks race prep for IMWI.  Worked very well for me.  So, IMLou is 8/28/11...a later season race like IMWI.  Are u planning a HIM before that?  Or is IMLou your A race?  So, depending on what u have planned count back from IMLou and see how many weeks u have to train.  Count out 20 weeks for OS, 2 weeks trainsition and then whatever time u have left to train for IMLou you could do 20 week IM plan or jump into the 12 week race prep.

Hope this helps, please ask more questions if you need to KN

  • KPJ - You'll want to have an early season half so you can start in Oct to Nov, get in the full 20 weeks and then do a few weeks to HIM training. Break and then go to full IM training come mid June. The OS is where we get fast and strong...it's the most important time of our (training) year!
  • Patrick,

Mid June seems awful late to jump into full IM training.  What's the difference between Out of Season and full IM training?

  • I will probably do a 1/2 IM during training next season... always good to check my times.  How early would you do a half IM if you're were doing IMLou?  Did you feel 12 weeks of race prep was enough?  20 weeks doesn't seem enough, but I don't know what a typical OS training plan really looks like.

Kathy- again Im not a RnP....my 2 cents because I did it last year...OS is hard. Period.  20 weeks of OS was hands down the best investment of my training time ever!!  Set me up nicely for my first HIM and only 10 weeks of race prep.  12 weeks of IM training was perfect for me...20 weeks would have been too long.  I was in great shape and had an awesome race..except for the dehydration...which has nothing to do with the training plans.  RnP recommend doing a HIM 12 weeks out from your IM race. So I raced a half June 12 and 12 weeks later did IMWI....worked perfect!  So, just find a HIM that is 12 weeks out from IMLou and you will be fine.  Like P said, also breaks up the season, cuz it can get kind of long.

  • Kathy,

Thanks for your thoughts.  It does seem like OS will keep me working hard through winter.  I definitely want to improve on time (hopefully sub 14:00 or more!).  OS seems like a great way to get faster.

  • If you're in doubt on the 12 week IM plan, I would urge you to take a careful look through the wiki and the e-books. The philosophy is really well laid out and we've had 100s of IM finishers of all shapes, sizes, and ages perform great on just this strategy. Trust the plan but ask questions. There are plenty of folks ready to help you out!
  • Kathy,

The 20 week OS and the 12 week IM plan are different plans for different goals. The idea behind the OS is to get you fast. No long stuff, just hard. Lots and lots of intervals on both the bike and run. Measure your skill set on a regular basis to watch your improvement. Just work really, really hard. At the end, that's the speed you've got to work with.

Then it's on to the IM or HIM plans. Start with your faster you earned in the OS and start adding distance and time while maintaining speed. 20 weeks of speed work followed by 12 weeks of increasing volume will get you to the finish line without a problem.
