WINTER HILLTRAINING

I am contemplating doing IM St. George in 2011 to make another attempt at qualifying ( missed  at IM Wisc. 3 weeks ago by 1:49) I like SG because of it's difficulty level (EN Execution)  and it is early in the season (get back to normal life sooner).

Dillema is: I live in NH thus will not have a lot of outdoor training for this May 5th race, which means not much outdoor bike hill training.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can simulate hill training on a trainer?  Certain peice of equipment, raising my front end?   Does riding at a 60 cadence really simulte what a hill would be like?

If the roads are clear I will get outside, I don't care how cold it is.

Should I not entertain SG because of this and just do LP, which is my other option?  I am having a lot of difficulty coming to a decision on this one.

Thanks

  • I think getting a Computrainer, and riding the St. Geroge 3D course would be one option that could work very well. Michele Cellai has the WI 3D course and she loved it. Maybe she'll check in and tell you more. I have to upgrade my CT this year, and will check out some new options for myself as well.

Also, doing interval sessions on the CT rules. Much better and more road feel than a regular trainer, IM (very strong) O. I love mine and really never mind riding indoors on it. Fluid trainer--shoot me now.

  • If you are using a trainer attached to your bike you could get a riser and also increase the back tire pressure significantly. I did this last year in prep for WI and found that it simulated the stress on my legs pretty accurately. Though obviously it's not changing throughout the ride.
  • Thanks for the tip Tom ! I say you can do it on the fluid trainer with your PM for sure, but you'll want to invest in some cycling DVDs to watch to pass the time with all those workouts!!! I Would also suggest you check out skate skiing for alternative ass-busting winter appropriate workouts...
