Race Day Wheels-Any thoughts.

Getting Nervous about my HIM this weekend.

So, I have two choices on wheels-

I bought a set of equinox wheels- 40 MM front and 80 MM rear I think. Tubular, all carbon with Tufo S33 Specials.

The equinox wheels are on edge hubs with Sapim aero spokes. These rims are also sold by matrix and gigantex among others.

They ride smooth, but I am not sure about tubulars for the race. I have a tube of sealant, but am a little nervous.

My other choice is to ride the stock bontrager 28 mm rims on the front and a H3 clincher I bought for the rear. I have ridden the H3 about 36 miles and loved it.

Any thoughts?

  • Funny, you didn't mention where the power meter fit in image
  • Ahhh run the tubulars! Have you been good? You won't flat. Have a nice race!
  •  Go with the tubulars.

  • I sold my tubulars to go back to clinchers. Just couldn't stand the mental anxiety before races worrying about "what if I flat" 'cause I just don't have much experience changing tubies.
  • Tom, the power meter is an ibike. Works either way.
  • I would run the stock wheels.  Depending on the tires/tubes they will likely be faster.  Tufo S33's are some of the worst rolling tires out there.  Take a look at the biketech review CRR chart.  Get different tires.  Once you glue them yourself you will then be confident enough to use them on race day.  The tufo's will make excellent spares.

  • I race on tubulars but always have a can of pitstop as my first line of defense before removing the tire. Using the pitstop is extremely quick and effective as long as you dont have a huge puncture. Im no expert in removing tubulars but i feel confident with the pitstop on hand.

  •  Thanks all,

Chris, I was wondering about the S33's. I love the way the rims look and the ride is smooth, but man, do they feel slow!

Too late to put new tires on now for a Sat. Race, so I think I will roll with the stock wheels and H3 clincher.

    Thanks.
