Just found out I am running NYC...and Hartford...uh oh, help?

Hey everyone~

Was signed up for ING Hartford on Oct 9 and following the Hack. Feeling good, ready to rock. Today I found out I got into NYC on Nov. 7.

Two questions:

1. Can I do 2 marathons that close?

2. What would the training look like Between Oct 9 and Nov 7?

Thanks as always

  • Jeremiah, in my opinion, you can do both. You may want to use Hartford as a 'training race' for NYC, not going all out. I'll leave it to the coaches, to tell you the training between the two, as I am doing Galloway method run/walk. If you go all out in Hartford, then do NYC as a 'just enjoy and finish' race. My 2 cents..
  • Jeremiah we're putting together a meetup in NYC on the Friday before the Marathon. Details here: NYC Marathon Meetup
  • Jeremiah-

Doesn't hartford have a 1/2 marathon component? I did it while in Anesthesia school. Can you switch to the half marathon?

  • I definitely think you could do both. I would structure it based on which race you consider to be "A" race. If you are all trained, tapered, and ready to fire the engines in Hartford then I would go ahead and do that. Maybe do NYC as a more relaxed tour of the city? I have done NYC twice and it was a blast for the shear magnitude of the event. NYC is a tough course to really run a PR at due to the logistics. You have to get up super early to catch the bus to Staten Island and then basically sit around outside for 3-4 hours until race star (in the cold, rain, etc). The first few miles are chock-a-block with people and guaranteed to be slow. Hartford is probably the faster venue if you are seeking to put down a fast time, qualify for Boston, etc.

In any event I would go very easy between the 2 races, your fitness is set, all you need to do is maintain which is easy to do with a few short runs in week one and then some intermediate stuff over the next few weeks. Probably toss in a 10-mile or so after 2-weeks just to make sure everything feels okay over an intermediate distance.
  • Thanks everyone for chiming in and really giving me some great perspectives. Looking forward to both marathons. I think the idea of NY as a "tour of the city" and the Hartford as the A race is a great idea.
