MCM training and race plan
Hi all newbie to the Haus. I have a question about my upcoming marathon. The Marine Corp Marathon is on Oct 31st, 2010. This is a very C race for me. Just thought it was a great venue to run. That being said I focused my training on an Oly that was on Sept 26th, 2010. However I did a HIM plan to get ready for MCM. With that I have only had 2 runs over 10 miles with max weekly volume of 22-23 miles and I'm a little worried about making the time limits for the race. I have ran 2 marathons with peak weekly volumes in the 40-50 mile range and 6 half's in the past 2 years as well as two 100 mile relays. I also completed the Goof challenge this year. The HIM plan was not an EN plan and had a Base, Build, Peak, Taper cycle. So here are my questions:
1. Race plan is to run a reverse ladder with 1 mile walking between i.e. 6 run, 1 walk, 5 run, 1 walk, 4R, 1W, 3R, 1W, 2R,1W,1.2R. Came up with this from the 100 mile relays. Wanted to know what ya'll think? BTW I have tried the run x minuets and walk x minuets and it really doesn’t work for me.
2. Training wise planning on a 16-18 mile run 2 weekends before MCM then tapering into the race. Given my race plan do you think that will be sufficient?
3. Open to any other thoughts.
Thanks for the help and looking forward to the OS.

@Dewey:
My thoughts are that unless your OutSeason starts in January, you should probably not do the race, OR just run half of it and call it a day. Although you appear to have a good history of long runs, it doesn't sound like you're particularly well-trained for this race. That aside however, what are your triathlon goals for the upcoming year, and when do you start your OutSeason? If you're starting the OS in October or November, then running a marathon (especially one for which you're not really trained) on Halloween is going to compromise the start of your triathlon OS.
Thinking big picture/long term, do you want to compromise your triathlon goals to "just finish" a C race?
If you don't start OS until January, then maybe doing it as a "cool thing to do" would be fine, as you have 2 months to recover. The ladder strategy seems fine to me. I'd try it out in training to see how it works for you, though.
@ Steve:
I am starting OS in OCT looking to FL 70.3 in May and SC half iron in Oct. I had considered transferring to MCM 10 K but that has closed, may check with RD to see if still possible. Main reason to continue forward is that I just hate to eat the entry fee and the non refundable money for the Hotel. Also we have planned a family trip around this race, obviously, prior to switching to the EN way. Deferring to next year will likely lead to the same concerns as I will likely start OS in Nov. and with the knowledge I have now have no plans to run a marathon. I do like the idea of running half but I need to be at mile 20 by 4 hours and not sure if I will make it walking that far. Slow runner, slower walker. Thanks for your thoughts I will keep them in mind as I decide how to proceed. Long run planned for this week end though may tell the tale.
Interesting thread Dewey. I am planning on reg for MCM for next year. Also planning on reg for IMLP in July for 2012. AS I am looking ahead.....late Oct marathon puts me in prolly Jan for OS. Which will be ok I think because I will get 16 weeks OS, one week tranisiton and 12 week race prep for IMLP. Be tight, but think it will work. Otherwise, potentially NOv OS, with just doing bike intervals and run intervals as recovery and run fitness returns....just thinking out loud here...thanks for getting me thinking 2 years out
