Cycling Shoe Recommendations

I've had the same pair of road shoes, Specialized I think, for about...6-7 years. Black, and the exterior looks pretty good. I've completely worn off the skidplatethingy on the left heel though (I unclip on that side) and they...smell. Bad. Pretty sure I could smell them while descending at 50mph+ last weekend .

Any recommendations? I'm willing to spend the dough for quality and they will be white, of course.

I've heard good things about Bont? Anything else?

Oh, and I'll pass on these recs to Patrick. His shoes are ratass nasty.

I did notice this when we rode in WI.

  • I bought the Specialized Tri Vent yesterday, white, but haven't ridden with them yet so I am no help.
  • Rich, I surveyed the ladies recently on this same question.  Here is the thread with their responses:

I ended up with Shimano mostly because it was the only shoe I could find in a shop where I could actually try on the shoe in my size before buying.  They are very comfy and I'm using the Specialized foot inserts inside them which feel good too and really helped with my hot foot issue.  Used them at Moo instead of my Tri shoes (it was worth a few extra seconds in T1 to put on cycling shoes vs my Sidi Tri Shoes for that extra comfort).

  • I love my Sidi's: Genius 4, circa 2000. New fancy Sidi's have all carbon soles and come in white. Very euro...
When my bike shoes start to smell (Scooby sniffs around them like they're dead woodchucks), I spray them down with Woolite Pet Odor Remover.
  • If your looking for a straight up cycling shoe I have really liked the LG CFS-150. The custom fitting makes them feel like a pair of gloves.

  • I've had Specialized Tri-vent for the last 5+ years (first the white version, now onto the grey/silver version).

NOTE: The specialized shoes have a 1.5mm 'camber' to them, so if your current shoes are flat/neutral, then make sure to add a wedge to get the same angle (it took me all these years to finally learn this).
  • No shoes recos, but I just spent $8 having my shoes cleaned and polished. They look/smell amazing. It may be the best $8 I spent on tri stuff all year.

Also, I've been told the new color of "pro" in shoes is yellow. So if you want to be cool. .

  • I would look into the Bont sub-9 (or better). IMHO, you spend enough time ass-on-saddle to justify the cost of this higher end, semi-customized stuff.

    See http://www.bont.com/cycling/products/index.html.

And man, that Bont Crono looks badass. Impractical, but badass.

Last, I'd recommend Nike Poggio, but they stopped making them 4-5 years ago. I literally have 4 BNIB pairs on my shelf - with a perpetual search on EBay for new ones - to make sure I never have to worry about replacements.
  • Whatever you decide upon, buy Patrick a pair.
  • Recently picked up a pair of DMT's that I'm very happy with.
  • I'm in Specialized Pro Road now, have been for 2 years and they're great shoes, great stiffness. When I have the $$ I'll either try the Specialized S-Works (double BOA!) or Bont. Leaning towards Bont.
  • I have worn a pair of Sidi road shoes for several years now and like them very much. However, they do, at least for me, present a problem with triathlons. They have the ratchet slide in at the top of the shoes which takes me two hands to release. That means that I am unable to remove them prior to getting off the bike coming into T2.

This is something you may wish to consider.
  • I really like Garneau shoes. I find the Sidi's and other Euro models are too narrow for me and lead to a lot of foot swelling, numbness, black toenails on long rides. Garneau is cut wider and no such problems.
  • why is everybody picking on my shoes. beware my wrath..I'll pull a SE7EN and have them ups'ed to your house in a box!!!!!! image
  • P's shoes are pretty darn foul.

Sidi's don't fit me that well. Bontrager RXL Road shoes fit better for those with flat wide feet.

  • I've used Specialized for years - both road & tri - and never a problem. As noted above, I've tried Sidi's on a number of times, and they just didn't fit as well. And I don't have wide feet. A pair of White Pro Road Team Saxo's look pretty good.
  • Rich - Specialized S-Works road shoe.  I've been riding them all year and love em.  The shoe is highly, highly adjustable.  There is a mesh drain near the ball of the foot.  Also, there will be a white model in 2011 from what I can tell.  Much better than the ratcheting and/or velcro systems I've had.  http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc...;scid=1019

  • reading these comments i realize that my Sidis may actually be too narrow, they dont "feel" narrow, but always get some numbness going...

anyone have actual experience with the Bonts?
